I think the 100 best PC games list is probably the most difficult thing you could possibly compose. Just look at the amount of PC games released in the history of the platform and then try to put them in order from best to worst. There is such a multitude of games. Do we rate them by historical significance? Fun?

Too many games are out there and it is almost impossible to comprise a list when hundreds of thousands of games have been made for it.

Yep. I don't really like shmups that much, and I never would have done it without the forum's encouragement! (Military Madness and Return Fire also belong on the list of games I would not have beaten except for encouragement from the forum.)

That's ok. I fully understand.

*cough* Lost Levels. *cough*

I imagine this is a product of spending two Summers playing R-Type Delta... instead of one of the really good shmups.

Much like Moby Dick is a great, but challenging, novel, the R-Type games are, IMO, the perfect shmups. I really should play something a bit easier at some point.

I have been putzing around with Summer Carnival '92 Recca, but I am not sure that game will be much easier unless I use the Nintendo 3DS's "save states" feature. Is there anything you recommend? (I have read that Deathsmiles is a lot of fun if you aren't trying for a 1CC.)

I enjoyed Doom 3 but it stretched on too far. It should have been a few hours shorter, or packed more scripted sequences and set pieces into the same length.

Deathsmiles is probably my favorite shmup ever. It's a lot of funny no matter how you are playing. And it's one of the few shmups I actually did work my way up to 1CC'ing.

BoneSnapDeez loves it, and he did the same thing. I think I will try that one out next. (Is the game's content appropriate for children? If so, I think my daughter would like watching me play through it.)

BTW, the classic shmups on my "to beat" list are:

Einhander
The Guardian Legend
RayForce/Galactic Attack
Sinistar
Zaxxon

Which of those should I tackle next?

DeathSmiles is the best "modern shmup" I'd say.

As far as kid-friendliness goes...... The game is all about, ya know, "lolis", which some might find a bit off-putting. But to kids I bet it just looks like a game about kids.
