I can't see a lot of angry teen males listening to these two to get their angst/rage on. Lambert and Gaga are really only "controversial" the way that Madonna was controversial, not the "blame for shootings" controversial that often accompanies hard rock. Who's the popular industrial/metal/shock rock band or artist of today?Luke wrote:Has to be Gaga or that Adam Lambert fellow.dsheinem wrote:
Was listening to that blast from the past while doing some cab painting last night. Probably my favorite Manson album.
What do 16 year olds listen to these days when they hate the world, their parents, etc.? Who's the Ozzy, Cooper, or Manson of this gen? Who's the next musical media scapegoat?
Re: What are you listening to at the present?
I honestly don't think there is one, which actually kinda bothers me.dsheinem wrote: Who's the popular industrial/metal/shock rock band or artist of today?
If such an artist exists (a popular one that is, shock bands are a dime a dozen) I don't know about them.
A few years ago I would've suggested Linkin Park, but they weren't about shock (at all) so much as making "depressed" teenagers be more depressed.

Ugh. Yeah, LP is crap. With Sabbath, Cooper, Manson, etc. there was some genuine innovation and talent, some real interesting political/religious/sexual undertones (or overtones), and just the right tinge of angst (something generally missing from a band like RATM or Metallica, for example). If we really have no popular shock rocker, then we live in boring times.CFFJR wrote:I honestly don't think there is one, which actually kinda bothers me.dsheinem wrote: Who's the popular industrial/metal/shock rock band or artist of today?![]()

And yeah, obviously shock rock exists en masse in certain niche genres, but I am trying to figure out if there's any that could be considered popular enough to make FOX News fall all over themselves to denounce it.

The closest thing I can think of is Mindless Self Indulgence, but I don't know if they've been that controversial.dsheinem wrote:Ugh. Yeah, LP is crap. Mindless Self Indulgence is semi-popular, but nowhere near on the level of Marilyn Manson (whom I love by the way). They've been around for well over a decade now, so the fact that you haven't heard of them yet is somewhat telling. They're reasonably good though, so you might want to give them a listen.
Yeah, this generation is very different in music. There doesn't seem to be any musical voice that unifies it, like we've seen in prior decades. I don't really think we'll see anything quite like that again for some time either. The internet gives expansive access with no focus, everything gets pirated like mad, nobody listens to the radio anymore, MTV dropped the M (in practice, not in title), cd & record shops have almost universally been shuttered, concept albums are all but dead thanks to mp3 and itunes, record companies are more concerned with copyright litigation than music, concert ticket companies are the scalpers now, and autotune has allowed talentless (albeit attention grabbing) hacks even more time in the spotlight. The age of the rockstar has come to a close. There's no way to make the kind of money required for the massive promotion and distribution that was possible in previous decades. The business side of the music industry is in shambles. Music now is just about finding a bunch of small bands that you like and just being comfortable with the fact that they will will always just be your band and will never make it big.
