AVGN's a character. The whole original premise was just some middle aged guy who never could get over those games that frustrated him as a kid. People really shouldn't take his opinions as gospel, that's not the point of him. Rolfe himself has said in interviews that he doesn't actually hate a lot of those games as much as his character does.
Beat me to it.

Sephiroth is a lame character. I get a lot of flak for this with FF fans who only got into the series (and mainly stayed with it too) with FF7. He's nothing compared to Kefka. Learning about his backstory only made him lamer. Perhaps I would have found him more interesting if I didn't know what was driving his actions were his mommy issues.

You're free to think what you will of sephiroth, but judging from your characterization of his motivation, you misread the character entirely.
What was driving his actions wasn't mommy issues. Hell, he wasn't even in control of himself. He is a puppet, a literal puppet for Jenova. She is controlling him as a proxy. Sephiroth essentially stops existing midway through the game

Not only is Sephiroth a terrible character, the entire plot of FFVII is laughably bad.

Being a
puppet
makes him even less of a character

I just never saw what was "cool" about him.

FTFY.
That's what happens when you first draw up the characters, get some environment designs in, and then start thinking how to piece them together with a story.

That's quite literally how FFVII: AC was made

They apparently created a bunch of cool looking fight scenes first then developed a story around them

The older games had a bit of an excuse, though. They're also written in another language, using hardware that has character limits.

While this doesn't sound impossible (they ripped off a scene from One Piece FFS), I would love to see a link about it. Only to further laugh at what has become of Square

I'll try to find the interview where they discussed this. The original film was just supposed to be a generally story-less short that was only 20 minutes long, and they kept adding to it because of demand. They wrote the actual story around the scenes they had already conceptualized last.
