Thoughts on the Game(s)

Wow, did not expect to enjoy this so much. I find it hard to believe this game bombed when it came out, I guess too many people, myself included, thought it looked like a Doom3 clone, but man was I wrong.

Really solid gameplay, an enjoyable storyline and pretty well put together engine.

That I know, and it changes nothing.

And seriously yeah, Prey was pretty damn solid. I'm stoked for the sequel.

Prey was great and the portal mechanics were pretty good. Too bad that it got overlooked :(

05/23: Vanguard Princess (PC)
07/10: Jamestown (PC)
07/12: Portal 2 (PC)

I went back and I put some more effort into Jamestown and now I've beat it on the normal, difficult, legendary, and divine difficulty settings. I completed all bonus challenge levels. And I've run through the gauntlet (all levels with only 2 continues) on the normal, difficult, and legendary difficulty settings.

I'm feeling pretty awesome now. Sometimes I'm watching myself play through the really hard parts and I feel like I'm watching someone else do it. I have to react so fast that I've already dodged bullets before I'm even aware that I needed to.

2010 Games Beaten

Pyscho Solider is probably my favorite game from SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 0, and a neat little shmup-style title. The difficulty ramps up to insane levels towards the later stages of the game, but it was fun to drop some credits and get through.

Shank is a fun beat 'em up that has style to spare. It felt like I was playing a really well done cartoon. I played through on the default normal difficulty and it took about 4 hours, which is well worth the $5 I spent for it. Having played Scott Pilgrim, TMNT Re-shelled, X-Men Arcade and a few other PSN brawlers, this is easily my favorite.

TOTAL: 29

After about 13 years since I made my first try in the game and got stuck at the final boss, I have finally beaten Final Fantasy II(IV for you purists) on the NTSC-U Super Nintendo! I'm sure at least a few of you have seen me ranting about it over the last few days in various threads on here, but I can say with conviction that it has been a wonderful roller coaster of thrills and excitement. This game gave me the experiences I play video games for, and for that I thank it. The plot was excellent, the characters interesting and entertaining, and the music stellar. This is exactly the kind of game that got me into RPGs, and it's Squaresoft doing what Squaresoft does best.

While I can safely say that this has been one of the best games I've played all year, I do have a few criticisms, though they're all relatively minor. The game was generally pretty easy, and many of the tropes that occur constantly in JRPG boss battles can be found here in their infancy...which unfortunately made pivotal battles a cakewalk since I knew what to do. There are also some strange moments with the algorithms in the game, so random encounters will sometimes occur literally every step you take, while sometimes you can wander halfway through a dungeon without fighting a single enemy. Damage variation was also a littler strange, with high-leveled characters sometimes doing relatively miniscule amounts of damage with their end-game equipment. It seems odd why a character at level 99 with their best weapon has a range of damage with a spread of several thousand points(and yes, I did get Cecil to level 99). But these grievances are minor compared to the quality of the game, and I believe they're generally fixed in the various remakes and rereleases of the game in the US. Oh, the game is also quite short. I was at the final dungeon in about 20 hours.

Bottom line, if you have access to FFIV or its early US counterpart-title FFII, PLAY IT! It's well worth it(and again, short).

As disappointed as I was that this game is nothing more than a port of what I feel to be an inferior hand held console’s game, the game’s forcing me to replay levels ruined any positive experiences for me. I don’t mind games that ask you to retread levels once you have new powers as long as they increase the challenge as a reward. With this game I couldn’t get past how “cheap” it felt to not only retread but be forced to replay each level with no extra challenges added. Another thing that hurt this game was how easy it was to upgrade your character to be too powerful making the game too easy. Even with these downfalls, my main gripe with the game was the lack of story. I understand that a handheld game having deep stories and cut scenes that last forever is not preferred for a portable game meant to be played in short bursts, and this is where I can’t get over it being a direct port. The graphics look nice on the Wii and I like the cartoon style, I just wish the developers would have put some time in this port and added more story to the game. If it wasn’t for my love of the Green Lantern comic books, this game would have been nothing more than a monotonous, repetitive, boring, and easy beat em-up game that I would have had no interest in playing.

Check my more detailed review of the Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters Wii/3DS here.

Recently:

-Champions of Norrath (PS2) - Great RPG in the same style as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or Diablo. Lots of creatures to fight, loot to find, and quests to be conquered.

-The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages for (GB Color) (After beating Oracle of Seasons with it) - Glad it's over, truthfully. It's a faithful and fun Zelda experience, but a hard one. There were plenty of times that I got stuck on puzzles and took a little break before coming back to it.

-Mega Man: Legends (PS1) - Unique 3D action game with a lot of RPG-elements added to it. Definitely not your average Mega Man game, but very enjoyable. I really wish the sequel wasn't so outrageously expensive.

-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (SNES) - Pretty good as far as 16-bit beat-em ups go. Played one, then you played em all. I enjoyed it since I watched the original Power Rangers as a kid.

-Star Fox: Assault (Gamecube) - That's the one that's more space-shipey and less Rare-adventurey. Pretty fun game, with impressive graphics, but far too short.

-Super Scribblenauts (Nintendo DS) - This game looks so childish, but it's so additively fun. It's gives such a HUGE toy box to play with.
