I am going to dust off my PC Engine CD for some shoot-em-up action. There are a lot of fairly decent shooters on PCE and PCE CD but they're rarely talked about.

Seriously? That game makes me want to cry.ExedExes wrote:If you asked me back in the 80s what some of my favorite shmups were, I'd definitely tell you Sky Shark. Until I got into MAME and the arcade culture a bit deeper, didn't even know Toaplan developed it. I have the NES release and it really taught me a lot about survival, and I can happily say I can 1cc *that*dunpeal2064 wrote:I'm playing Sky Shark at the moment. Toaplan is amazing.

Toaplan made some tough stuff, that's for sure. There is just something awesome about the way they were trying to steal my quarters. They have difficulty comparable to bullet hell shooters, but in a much more pure way. No score, no reason to not bomb... just live.
... speaking of Toaplan, I'm playing the Sat port of Batsugun, normal mode. Pretty forgiving for a Toaplan shooter actually.
The arrange music is excellent, I prefer it to the original track.

That's why I like them so much. They don't need a screen full of shots to make it difficult. They're plenty difficult on their own. Thinking back to games also like Tiger Heli and Twin Cobra, they were just about quick, twitch-like actions to anticipate and avoid shots.dunpeal2064 wrote:Toaplan made some tough stuff, that's for sure. Re: What shmup are you playing now?
I really love Toaplan which should go without saying because old-school shooters are my favorite type. I've never been much for the psychedelic bullet-hell romps of today though I enjoy a few.
I finally got around to picking up Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Aces for the 360. I've worked my way through IV last week. I enjoyed it a lot but I don't think it's going to become one of my favorites. I'm looking forward to playing the Fighters series since I've never touched them before.

Finally sunk my teeth into Ikaruga today. Me likey. GC port has tons of features, and I really enjoy the built-in rumble feature (don't see that much on shmups!), also the "Conquest" mode which shows you the ideal chains for each section for maximum points (more like look over RB member's shoulder mode
)
Also been playing Silk Worm too. Tecmo doesn't get a lot of love as far as their shmups go sometimes.

Are you playing 'normal' mode on ikaruga? It took me ~40h of play time to 1cc easy mode, and I'll be damned if I can get past level 3 or 4 on normal mode with one credit.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

I'm doing Normal mode and default extend at 3/5M. Disabled Trial Mode and Difficulty Select.skate323k137 wrote:Are you playing 'normal' mode on ikaruga? It took me ~40h of play time to 1cc easy mode, and I'll be damned if I can get past level 3 or 4 on normal mode with one credit.
Chapter 1 is no problem at all. Realized the energy release is also tied to the current polarity so it makes the boss go down a bit faster. Chapter 2 is kicking my ass with the constant color switching to stay alive, for now

I have been playing gunbird 2 which i love but my game data is corrupted
Re: What shmup are you playing now?
I had mentioned Silk Worm in a previous post, so just for laughs I played as both vehicles.
Look at the score differences. This was done on difficulty level 3 (out of 5) and extends at 100/300/800K.

If anyone has played Firepower 2000 (SNES), we all know the Jeep rules. Didn't think it was also the same here. More stuff to put up with on the ground (and constant bombs being dropped), but you don't have to deal with all that stuff in the air and you can destroy that periodic super-heli before it assembles and get 2 power ups (and point items) which increases your player rank and gives you power-ups on respawn. Plus, I made it to Wave 6 on the Jeep compared to Wave 4 on the Heli.
