Mom got herself a new laptop, which means the old desktop is now officially mine.

The only problem is, it's slow as hell. We've had it for years and while it's got a decent amount of hard drive space (around 200GB) it's only got a little over 600MB of ram. Which, when I think about it, is probably why the poor thing is so damn slow  So right now I'm looking into upgrading it, which looks to be a pretty easy process. The hard part is figuring out what the computer can handle.

If it's a regular (not assembled at home) PC you can find specs online.

Or keep it the way it is and make it a DOSBox machine!!!

Unfortunately, it was put together by some local guys and mom has no idea where she put the paperwork, if she still even has it. But I downloaded a free system checker and it says that the maximum capacity for the machine is "8192MB." I don't think I'll need 8GB of ram for what I want to do with it, but its good to know I can always upgrade if necessary.

As for turning it into a DOSBox machine... that's kinda the idea. I want the extra memory to play some of the other games I have, too. But the reason I don't want to get rid of the desktop is because it's got the 3.5 floppy drive. I'm turning this sucker into my 'slightly-retro computer game machine.'

And, I swear to God, not 5 minutes after you typed that, Bone, I was cleaning out a drawer with mom and we found the floppy for Billy the Kid. I laughed a little more at finding that than I should have

Figure out what the motherboard is, then you can see what type of memory it will take. If you can't tell from the board or with the program you already fetched, SIW will tell you plenty of info about the machine, including the memory that's in there now.

OK...actual random thought...

I think it is more fun finding old cart-based games out in the wild than it is finding disc-based games.

Disc based..... always gotta worry about scratches.

Plus cart-only >>>>>>> disc-only.

So. It's actually really quite nice here in Missouri. Except for the fact that I really, really, really hate humid climates. I break out even worse than I normally am. I don't feel clean. No me gusta.

Yep, MO is humid except for like two weeks each year. During the late spring and summer I would end up showering twice some days.
On the plus side. Today we got to a high of 75 or so. Extremely pleasant. So much better than the normal 90-100 this time of year.

And yeah. I'll be showering twice each day while I'm here.
