If my memory serves, I remember a backlash against ZERO from the voice of the internet. Maybe more people like it than the people who don't these days, but I've read plenty of comments backing up what I think is a great entry to the series.
It is an easier and more story heavy Metroid game though.
METROID
After Zero, played the original in the dark both Friday and Saturday night. Definitely the most "sci-fi mystery" of the entire series.

You beat me to it Luke. I'm also planning on doing a GBA Metroid + Zero Mission playthrough later this year. I'll probably throw in Fusion too.

The original Metroid still has an incredible atmosphere that no other game has ever been able to emulate. I remember playing it as a little kid and feeling amazed at how expansive the world was and how variably helpless and powerful I felt depending on where I was in the game.
Also of note, the technology behind the game was pretty stellar at the time. This was back before the the jump to the second or third generation memory management controller - yet the developers were still able to rig it so that through a trick of data location they were able to make the game much larger than almost any other NES game.
But, as I so often bring up, it was Gunpei Yokoi and his Nintendo RD1 team. Excellence was to be expected.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Re: Games Beaten 2014
I think because the original Metroid had constant ceilings/walls, it really puts an emphasis on the claustrophobia to me. And the background is that pure bleak black. Whenever I go back to it it's always strange, such a dark adventure coming from Nintendo that still to this day has such a strange eerie atmosphere.
Zero is up there with Resident Evil GC for me when it comes to best remakes ever.
Replaying Fusion myself on the Wii U now, wasn't the biggest fan of it originally, but I'm appreciating it a bit more now. Kind of funny how the title pops up as "Metroid 4". Pretty disturbing this and Zero were the last 2D Metroid's we've gotten in over 10 years. =\
Now, Super Metroid is tied with Link to the Past for my favorite games ever, but when it comes to Metroid, as much as I love it, I think Blaster Master tops it. I can imagine Metroid was a big influence, but damn Blaster Master has so much variety, that music, and the level design/graphics were amazing. I will always wonder what an SNES sequel could have been like, especially if it could have rivaled Super Metroid. That Genesis Blaster Master is just... egh.

Always been one of my favorites... yet I always wanted to race through this level because suddenly the insane difficultly curve from this point on blows your face off. With no saves and passwords, still one of the toughest games to get through.

1. Tearaway- PS Vita (Platinum Trophy)
2. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag- PS4 (Platinum Trophy)
3. Resogun- PS4 (Platinum Trophy)
4. Super Stardust Delta- PS Vita
5. Galaga Legions DX- PS3
6. Under Defeat HD- PS3 (Platinum Trophy)
7. Ketsui Extra- PS3
8. Tomb Raider: DE- PS4 (Platinum Trophy)
9. DoDonPachi- PS1 (Japanese PSN)
10. Strider- PS4 (Platinum Trophy)
11. Demon's Souls- PS3 (Platinum Trophy)
12. Shadow of the Colossus- PS2
13. Guacamelee!- PS Vita (Platinum Trophy)
In my very limited library of games for the Vita, I would say Guacamelee! is my favorite one right now. It is a 'Metroidvania' style of game. The story is pretty simple, but yet it flows pretty good. Graphics and the art style are very pretty and the gameplay itself is tight and fun.
There are a few difficult platforming sections, specifically getting orbs in Tule Tree and Sierra Mountains. Other than that the game is pretty easy.

Holy crap, you should get a medal for Platinum-ing that game.

Haha, why do you say that?
I used the Pollo Luchador suit for pretty much the whole game (it regens health). So on boss fights if you can hang on the wall and regen your health, rinse/repeat.
The platforming section on Tule Tree was a bitch. It took me about an hour.

Don't you have to get all the pieces of the mask to Platinum or am I remembering wrong? I got to a hidden section that was sort of Meatboy-esque and it was positively rage inducing. Saw blades and what not everywhere. I beat the game no problem, but trying to get those mask pieces was nuts. Didn't have the patience.

Yep, that's Tule Tree. Worst section of the game, IMO. The dimension swapping while jumping to other platforms was just a pain in the ass. I had the most problems with the second section, where you have to run up the pole, dimension swap, jump to the other side, then dimension swap back to the other side without the spikes. The saw blade part was the last section, so you were almost done. I used Goat Fly while dimension swapping on that part and that seemed to work best for me.
Sierra Mountains was bad too for the orb, because you had to jump to disappearing platforms, and the would only appear for a second or so. So if you missed one on your jump, chances are you would fall and have to start over. I got past that section with a little bit of luck (ok, a lot of luck) and memorization after countless deaths.
