That just means they don't have the vocabulary to express what they're feeling. Kind of like when I say a game feels "off", even if I can't quite put my finger on it. That's often for games that I should like, that I want to like, yet somehow don't.

I always attributed someone not knowing why they like something to them being picky. When you call them out on it they always get mad because they know deep down inside that they are afraid and get defensive.

When someone says they don't like something but don't know why, it makes me think they are too mentally lethargic to bother examining their own internal opinions. Or that they don't respect their inquisitor enough to expound on why they don't like something. Both possibilities are rooted in laziness however.

While I agree that it's disconcerting when people don't give substantive reasoning for their biases/prejudices, it's probably more to do with how our brains developed. The part of our brains that handles cognitive reasoning is a more recent addition, and as an unfortunate result, we interpret information first emotionally, then rationally.

Not being able to articulate one's tastes is likely just the emotional part of the brain doing what it does before the rational part of the brain has had time to, or even cares to, make sense of those emotions.

It is like a kid with food. They don't like something, because they don't know what it tastes like. We fill ourselves with preconceived notions and judgements on what an experience is going to be like and get scared that it will be a bad experience. We are literally scared to try it.

I dislike scallops. I've eaten them tons as my family loves them. I don't like them. I like mussels, and a whole plethora of other shell fish. I can't explain to you why I don't. I haven't had emotional trauma relating to scallops nor do I dislike many things that are similar. It's not quite the texture or the flavor. I honestly can't really put my finger on why I don't like scallops and I have thought about it quite a bit.

It is one thing to say you don't like something having never tried it. But just because someone can't find a reason for not enjoying something after having tried it (sometimes repeatedly) doesn't mean they're being "mentally lethargic" or anything of that sort. I do believe people should try to understand why they like or dislike certain things but that doesn't mean that they'll necessarily find a good reason either way.

That wasn't being discussed though. Only thing that was discussed was the dislike for not being able to explain why someone dislikes something.

Most of the time, I chalk it up to one of two things. Either they honestly don't know why they don't like it, or they fear how their opinion will be seen. Its also possible that they just don't care why they don't like it, they just know they don't.
