I wonder, too, if it was a way to get around some age rating stuff. Don't know if that would have pushed it into "M" territory, but who knows?
This applies to no one on this forum, but excessive hand-wringing over "video game censorship" always comes across as silly and, I hate to say, weebish. Changes are always made in localization to accommodate a different culture and ratings board. These alterations are voluntary - made by the developer and/or publisher - not forced upon them by some legislative committee. Funny how removal of big juicy bouncy anime boobs qualifies as "censorship" but severe modifications to story and dialogue are generally okay. Hmmmmmmm.......

Now, I could get behind this anti-censorship ideal if it were illegal, or even difficult, to import games from Japan. Except it isn't. In virtually every single case where a video game has content altered (whether it be a physical game or Steam VN or whatever) there exists another (original, unaltered) version available for play. Usually for the same price. We have rights as consumers. Exercise them as you wish. Personally speaking, I'll continue to play North American localized releases, as I enjoy having my games in English and the removal of a small amount of risque content done to appease the ESRB or consumers or whatever is a small enough price to pay. If I feel as if too much has been changed than I can simply buy the game's original version.

(Not tryin' to pick fights, just dumping thoughts. I think it's also important to remember that we RB posters are far from the typical video game consumer).

To a certain extent, I agree with Bone, but typically, while I don't get my panties in a wad about censorship like some people do, it does irk me. It's not even that I need my gallons of gore or underage anime titty. For me, as one who sees video games as art, it's about not getting the artist's original vision. I know that localization, by necessity, must make some changes with things as basic as translation, and I know that there are cultural differences and rating issues to take into consideration as well, but I can't help but think of it from an artist's perspective (regardless of whether or not that's how the developers see it). If I write a scathing indictment of a certain organization, for example, and in translating it to French (should I ever be that hot shot a writer), the French translators mellow out my accusations because the French people adore whatever group I'm damning, I would be upset. That's not what I wrote; that's not what I meant.

I know that analogy isn't completely comparable, and I know that, in most cases, the issues are much more complex than that, but that's the best my exhausted mind could come up with at 10:30 pm. Hope that makes some sense to someone. If not, just ignore me and carry on. :P

Gotta admit, I like boobs. Censorship is lame but has never bothered me too much. I can't really think of any specific cases where I ran into something perplexing though.

Also just realized Elkin changed his avatar.

I just hate when dollar signs drive censorship decisions. They were worried about losing their rating and getting less sales. I care more about artistic integrity than I do money. And I honestly think its ridiculous to think that a different rating would have cost them money. This is a niche JRPG series, the people who planned on buying it were not going to turn it down due to a different rating. I HAVE however, heard of other people choosing not to buy the game due to the censorship. They are either going to wait for the PC version, which may have the original scene added in, or get the PS4 version on sale (or used) at a later date

So basically, this dumb decision may have cost them a few sales and also got them some bad publicity. Just leave the damn game the way it was originally intended to be. Censorship irritates me something fierce, and not just in video games. I've also heard that the alteration of that scene actually diminishes the symbolism of a later scene in the game. So while they can claim that this is the only change made to the English version of the game, it is a change that affects the game as a whole.

Controversial opinion go:

Retail release video games are first and foremost products, not artworks. They are created primarily to make money. I can guarantee that they were changed from the original vision multiple times by the publisher in Japan too, before they made it to the west and were changed again.

A company that creates these products to make money has every right to change the work in order to ensure they won't lose potential revenue.

If you want artistic integrity, you might want to look at self published works.

Yep, while artists certainly work for video game companies, their primary goal is to make money. And if sales aren't strong enough for a property because of decisions that might cause issues in a particular region, that doesn't bode well for that artist's future vision to be experienced by anyone when it gets shut down because of flagging sales.

I agree that the change in question with Berseria is kinda stupid, but at the same time... blame the ESRB, blame cultural sensitivity, but don't blame the company for wanting to maximize sales. That's quite literally what they exist for, as much as we gamers wish to believe otherwise.

I think in this case, it's blame PEGI, since the explanation from Bandai-Namco said it was for a 16 rating, which the ESRB doesn't hand out.

Even then, relatively speaking, it's not that big. I'd agree, it shouldn't have been a necessary change, but things do get tweaked in localization. Sales are what keep them bothering to localize the series in the first place.
