Still trying to go through what I have to see what I can play. Still really bad at narrowing it down though lol

So far, what I definitely want to play:
- Super Mario World (SNES)
- The Ultimate Doom (GOG)

What I have that I'm guessing might be classics (don't want to do both Vagrant Story and Xenogears though):
- Final Fight 2 (SNES)
- Ikaruga (Steam)
- Tomb Raider (GOG)
- Vagrant Story (PS1)
- Xenogears (PS1)
- Yoshi's Island (SNES)
So I don't really have much variety to choose from but I'm willing to emulate (assuming it's easy to set up) if anyone has any good suggestions. I'm open to pretty much anything (as long as it's not super long or super heavy strategy wise), especially in the SHMUP department since it sounds like Ikaruga isn't a normal SHMUP and I have no clue on what's good and classic lol.

Your list is pretty tight, I'd be sure to play the Master System version of Zaxxon, preferably the 3-D Glasses version if you've got access to them. It was my favorite 3-D game on the 'ol Master. Granted Zaxxon 3D is kind of a sequel to the original Zaxxon, it uses a different perspective as such.

Moon Patrol is boss. The arcade version was for sure. Sunk money quarters into it back in the 80s.

The arcade version of Zaxxon is emulated on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Plus I have it on Atari 2600, Intellivision, and ColecoVision. That should have me covered. Looks like I could also get it on the 5200 if I really wanted to struggle with controls.

Is Zaxxon 3-D an enhanced port or a completely different game? Either way I'll keep an eye out as it appears to be cheap.

Moon Patrol I have played casually but have never finished. I actually didn't realize it was an Irem game until very recently.

I think of it as an enhanced port. From what I've played of the arcade and Master System versions, the overall game design is largely the exact same. It's just the Master System version existed in a forward perspective view to enhance the 3D effect. With the 3-D glasses, Zaxxon 3D was seriously impressive insofar as pulling off convincing 3D. By that I mean; holy shit there are space ships flying out of my tv blowing up in my living room omfg.

If you're bored this summer, the world record for Zaxxon is 4,680,740 points scored by Vernon Kalanikaus of Lā'ie, Hawaii, on March 15, 1982. Pretty sure you can take down his legacy Bone.

I just couldn't wait, and I started Final Fantasy Adventure yesterday. So far, its pretty great, and since its been remade twice, I get to enjoy it two more times!

In any event, here is my final "summer games challenge" list:

.....

1. Adventure - Broken Sword: Director's Cut HD (PC/iOS)
2. ARPG - Final Fantasy Adventure (GB)
3. Beat 'em Up - Guardian Heroes HD (SATURN/360)
4. Fighting - Fighting Vipers (ARCADE/SATURN/PS3), Virtua Fighter Remix (ARCADE/SATURN), and Virtua Fighter 2 (ARCADE/SATURN/PS3)
5. FPS - Perfect Dark HD (N64/360)
6. JRPG - Phantasy Star IV (GEN)
7. Platformer - Banjo Kazooie HD (N64/360)
8. Racing - Mario Kart 64 (N64) and Virtua Racing (ARCADE/PS2)
9. Run 'n Gun - Ikari Warriors (ARCADE/PS3)
10. Shmup - Galactic Attack/Layer Section/RayForce (ARCADE/SATURN)

.....

I am kind-of cheating since I have thirteen games on my list, but I really am excited to play through each and every one of these games!

I approve.

So are most people here going to start when summer actually beginnings (sunshine, flowers, noiseredux busts out the speedo) or can we go by Ack's Georgian definition of summer (April through November) and start now? I think I can get rolling within a week or so.
