While I mostly agree with you, at the same time I think they've retracted too far. It's not wise to basically if it's at face value, plan to show basically nothing. Then you're just feeding into the prick behavior that you're nothing, washed up, and have nothing to show for yourself and this time it makes it true. Perhaps bow out of taking up that massive floor space and setup a normal sized booth and leave the showiness for Japan where they still show some respect and don't act like little babies in the media.

It solely exists as a commercial marketing presence for the industry, which as video game fans we enjoy, but I doubt it works out financially for almost anyone involved whom isn't named ESA.

The culture behind E3 coverage, and the larger video gaming journalism culture overall, is not particularly conducive to showcasing things equally, or in an unbiased manner. Year after year, pretty much everything Nintendo shows gets constantly derided by these groups or worse, purposefully misrepresented. To the point that Nintendo has slowly reduced their involvement in the activities. Why allow your product unveils to be completely enveloped by antagonistic entities?

Do I want to see huge Nintendo stage shows? Hell yeah. Do I think they're going to do them again? No way. The vocal culture towards Nintendo's projects are openly vitriolic. I can't blame them for reacting the way they have.
Plus, the relevance of E3 has been waning the last three years. Five to ten years ago, we all looked forward to E3. The last few years have all been pretty lackluster. Bethesda and Microsoft are the only ones who made a really big deal of E3 last year.

Wait, what?

Sony showed off tons of big games and made a whole load of major announcements.

Ubisoft gave it a good go too.

I know the internet went wild after SONY's press conference, but I found it pretty mild. Cashing in on the FF7 cashcow? Yawn. Last Guardian looks neat I guess. The biggest eyeroll at that press conference was Shenmue III. SONY is a monstrously wealthy international megacorporation - They don't need a Kickstarter for goodness sake. If they wanted to make Shenmue III a Playstation 4 exclusive, all they need to do is cut a check to fund it. Guess what they haven't done yet. I swear Shenmue fans are masochists that just love to be kicked in the head time and again.

It's not as though they have people heckling the stage. Their presentations would/did get livestreamed, same as everyone else, and MS and/or Sony are also frequently critiqued.

I think it's more your first point. It's an expensive show to put on, and given that it's basically a marketing vehicle, there are other approaches. Not participating in the same way is also a PR move. It perpetuates the image of being the "different" company.

Everyone is going to cover Nintendo's stuff, anyway. I don't know that their presence at the show is necessary, honestly.

The show itself isn't necessary for anyone, really. Everything that Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft want covered is going to get covered. Same with Activision, Square, EA, and Ubisoft. The proliferation of YouTube, forums, and blogs has made sure of that. It's not like the 90s where trade shows are the big outlets; now you just drop a line to a handful of sites, blogs, or YouTubers, and within a day, the whole gaming community knows.

I'm not excited about what the NX is yet, simply because I don't know what it even is.

I am excited about what the NX means though. This platform is the sink or swim moment for Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer. The stakes have never been higher. I want to see Nintendo pull another Wii out of their hat, more than I want to see them go the way of Sega.

Gaming is going to be a lot more mundane if Nintendo drops out of hardware manufacturing. Playstation and Xbox may be the driving force behind the industry these days, but Nintendo is the soul of the industry.

Same here I'm not excited at all about the NX the whatever it is. I am excited to find out what it is though as I'd like to know what direction they're going. We have some leaks, some soft-confirmed stuff they won't speak of like NintendOS being basically an Android skinning (roughly like FireOS) so it begs the question what the hell is it? What is Nintendo going to do to stop the bleed before they're irrelevant on the hardware side of things? They can't live on fans alone anymore and are aware of it, but will they do the right thing (finally) or the wrong?

I will add with the post that popped up before I finished this -- if Nintendo dropped out I think I'd just stop buying console games. My PS4 gets rare use, I'd sell off anything MS I was gifted and just stick with the computer as it has so many more choices of things gaming and beyond so why bother? It's a console, it's internet, it's business, it's pleasure, it's music, it's a damned museum of any sort of whatever crosses your mind and beyond. The PS4 and One are wannabe cloned up (90% so) multimedia boxes doing crap on your TV you can already do on a damned phone more or less for far less money and that's scary in itself.
