^I'd be 100% fine with swapping SH2 as one of the two games in the October double-bill.

I'd like to give my support to Zork and lemmings.

For Zork, I never actually played a text-based game and it seems to be a popular/well known game in this genre. I also read in this thread that there never were text-based adventure games in previous together retro, so it would be nice to explore different type of games.

For lemmings, I consider it's a great game and I believe this title could lead to interesting talks. There are numerous levels with great diversities in the way to complete them.

There is also a game I would like to mention

Image
Title : The Lost Vikings
Genre : Platform/Reflexion
Platforms : Genesis, SNES, GBA, PC? (if we also count Lost Vikings 2, then we can add PS1 and Saturn)

In this game, you control three different vikings (one at the time) and each one have special abilities (most notable ones are : one can jump, one can attack and one can defend). The vikings have been kidnapped from their home by a spaceship and they travel different timeframes in the hope to get back home. The fact you have to control more than one character to clear levels (and yes, all of them must make it to the end) is interesting and, as far as I know, it's something that has not been done often. The game also have great variety and challenge.

I'd be down for Silent Hill 2. Mostly because it'd be cool to pick it up again next year, almost a year after my first time ever playing it. Really I think SH 1 or 2 would be great, and would make for some good discussion.

If only someone had posted a link earlier in the thread answering this question.

Um -- did I strike a nerve?

It's just a good game, is all --

I'll write the article  I've been doing write-ups on TR Shumps, anyway :)

Hobie doesn't like Deus Ex, so my comment was a subtle suggestion that I am not in favor of it.

Exed, if your argument for Deus Ex vs. Half Life is about a "community aspect," I don't see any argument at all. Half Life sparked a ton of community creation, modding, etc. in a way that only a few games before or since have ever done - and Deus Ex is not among them.

I guess I ought to throw my "votes" in on this.

Returning a bit to last year, I'm all for Baldur's Gate, Space Channel 5, and Puyo Puyo.

Turtles and Road Rash are awesome. At this point, if we don't do those I'll cry.

No preference on fighters. Fatal Fury sounds good to me.

I like the idea of The Lost Vikings. I've never actually beaten that game (though it is really freaking long as I recall) so it gets my vote.

Half-Life vs. Deus Ex, I seriously don't care. I played 75% of Half-Life for the summer game challenge (I'll finish it sooner or later). As for Deus Ex, I'll be playing that very soon anyway as a friend loaned me a copy. So...meh.

If I may make an alternate suggestion for a fps, would anyone be interested in playing Rise of the Triad?

For October, as much as I like Silent Hill 2, I just beat it this summer. If we do a Silent Hill, I'd prefer to revisit the original, which I loved but haven't played in years. Generally though, I like the idea of House of the Dead 2 with Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Truth is, Zombies would probably consume me (har har) anyway, as I have a real tough time putting that game down once I get started.

Update 4:

Notes: For a while there, Lemmings, Silent Hill 2 and Parappa the Rapper caught up with their rival choices. Those are certainly close fought categories.

Game & Watch is now the most voted for choice, above Space Channel 5.

Platformers are becoming much more closely fought.

Some categories seem to have clear favourites atm - Turtles in Time and Game & Watch in particular.

I didn't know what to classify Sunset Riders as, so it's probably wrong.

Anyhow:

Action Adventure:
Metal Gear 2 (2), Zelda: Minish Cap (1), StarTropics (1)

Adventure:
Zork (4), Dizzy (3)

Beat 'em Up:

Platformer:

once again, I must thank you for all your help in this thread, AJ.

so here's another revision, this time with possible polls for close calls noted:

Jan - RPG - Baldur's Gate
Feb - Other - Game & Watch
Mar - Puzzle - Puyo Puyo or Lemmings (poll?)
Apr - FPS - Half-Life
May - Platformer - Fantastic Dizzy
Jun - Fighting - Fatal Fury Special
Jul - Racing - Road Rash series
Aug - Beat-em-up - TMNT Turtles In Time
Sep - Text Aventure - Zork
Oct - Horror Double Feature - HOTD2 and/or ZAMN and/or Silent Hill 2 (poll?)
Nov - Rhythm - Space Channel 5 or Parappa (poll?)
Dec - Sim - Wing Commander

...as you can see everything with 3+ votes is represented so far. The once clear victory of Puyo now looks like it is in competition with Lemmings. I'd personally be happy to play either -- I love Puyo, but I'm far more familiar with it. Game & Watch takes the place of Bubble Bobble which hadn't gotten much praise. G&W isn't golden age arcade, but it's certainly got some major historical importance. I switched this to Feb as a compromise, and can't imagine that anyone would argue that shorter mini-game kind of games make sense to occupy the shortest month? October needs to be sorted out. We all agree we'll play a horror double-feature, so we need to decide which two of these three. I'm happy to play any of them: either two arcadey shooting games, or one arcadey shooter game and one slow-burner. Our rhythm choice is still between SC5 and Parappa.

Thoughts on all this, folks?
