Apparently the designers took it as literally as possible when people told them Ghosts and Goblins games should be really hard - this game is insane, even with multiple hit points. Enemies attack non stop so I never feel I can keep moving safely, and the muddy 3d graphics to nothing to help. I've beaten Super Ghouls n' Ghosts which I found to be a nice level of difficulty - not easy, but certainly not as hard as everyone says. This game is just torture.

As a GnG fan I can say that I really disliked it also. Probably the source of all its problems in my opinion is that Arthur and all of the enemies are giants in this game compared to the previous ones. At almost any point in time the vast majority of the screen is taken up by hazards and hitboxes and navigating it all is like threading a needle, which is especially frustrating with Arthur's clunky movement (I know that they made things large to make the things onscreen visible, but it's still a broken mess). This also makes reacting to anything a problem because of how large (and as a result proximal) everything is, you have very little time to react to hazards before they reach you. There were also some shockingly stupid decisions made in regards to the game design. Collecting the rings is just aggravating, and finding red chests is a big fat chore. Also, so many of the levels were designed around giant gaping pits in this one. At the very least pitfalls weren't a huge emphasis in earlier games, there were often stretches in which pits were reasonably sparse or at least manageable to navigate. In this one there are massive stretches in which the only way you're going to die is that an enemy is going to fly from offscreen and knock you off of a tiny platform into a pit (like those mini Arremers, those things are just so stupid in this one). Add to that the terrible level gimmicks (wind that ruins your already restrictive jump arc, volcanic tremors that constantly stun your character while there are still enemies attacking) and you have a game that's just a consistent mess.

Ghosts n' Goblins is always challenging, but usually there's at least some small degree of fairness or reason to it. Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins is just hard because it's a broken disaster, not because it possess any sort of reasonable or rewarding challenge.

I don't know if it counts as a horror game, but it is certainly gruesome. I played the new Hotline Miami today. Holy shit this game is brutal, unsettling, and awesome. It's weird that a game can be this disturbing and have such simple graphics. This is very much a gamer's game, so play it when you get the chance.

I made it to "The House of the Dead" in Zombie Revenge tonight. I just love nostalgic moments like these.

Beat HOTD4 and playing some of Resident Evil Revelations (which is pretty decent so far).

I still hope to get to D sometime this weekend/early next week. I think I'll take Noise's advice and jump to Darkstalkers 3 to get my fighting/horror mix fix. I might even play some Deathsmiles, since I haven't fired up a shmup in a bit.

Considering it was my primary motivation to get the Move, I can't say I was disappointed. It wasn't as good as Overkill (my favorite in the series) but it is easily the prettiest and most action packed (you have a machine gun the whole time). There's a nice sale on PSN for HOTD3, 4, and Overkill that's worth picking up if you have none or one of the games already.

....and now I played through both Vampire Savior and D. Both were a lot of fun, though D gets a bit plodding at times and most of the second disc is governed by a "turn the lever this many times" gimmick that really annoyed me (yes, I resorted to a FAQ). Nonetheless both games had very memorable endings - Lilith "coming inside" of Morrigan in Darkstalkers 3 and my character
"becoming part of" her father
in D. D's final screen informed me that I had finished with the "bad" ending, but when I checked out the "good" ending on YouTube I am pretty certain that the "bad" ending is much more badass, so I am glad it is what I chose.

All in a all a very successful day for playing horror-themed games!
