Apparently the designers took it as literally as possible when people told them Ghosts and Goblins games should be really hard - this game is insane, even with multiple hit points. Enemies attack non stop so I never feel I can keep moving safely, and the muddy 3d graphics to nothing to help. I've beaten Super Ghouls n' Ghosts which I found to be a nice level of difficulty - not easy, but certainly not as hard as everyone says. This game is just torture.
As a GnG fan I can say that I really disliked it also. Probably the source of all its problems in my opinion is that Arthur and all of the enemies are giants in this game compared to the previous ones. At almost any point in time the vast majority of the screen is taken up by hazards and hitboxes and navigating it all is like threading a needle, which is especially frustrating with Arthur's clunky movement (I know that they made things large to make the things onscreen visible, but it's still a broken mess). This also makes reacting to anything a problem because of how large (and as a result proximal) everything is, you have very little time to react to hazards before they reach you. There were also some shockingly stupid decisions made in regards to the game design. Collecting the rings is just aggravating, and finding red chests is a big fat chore. Also, so many of the levels were designed around giant gaping pits in this one. At the very least pitfalls weren't a huge emphasis in earlier games, there were often stretches in which pits were reasonably sparse or at least manageable to navigate. In this one there are massive stretches in which the only way you're going to die is that an enemy is going to fly from offscreen and knock you off of a tiny platform into a pit (like those mini Arremers, those things are just so stupid in this one). Add to that the terrible level gimmicks (wind that ruins your already restrictive jump arc, volcanic tremors that constantly stun your character while there are still enemies attacking) and you have a game that's just a consistent mess.noiseredux wrote:^I hated UG&G. I still play the old Ghosts N games, but yeah. The PSP one is terrible.
Ghosts n' Goblins is always challenging, but usually there's at least some small degree of fairness or reason to it. Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins is just hard because it's a broken disaster, not because it possess any sort of reasonable or rewarding challenge.
