He's black in Dragon Ball Kai.

You're misjudging the series based on the censored version you get on the US. It's not like that.

Also, it's indeed all filler. I'll try to make you understand. It's absurd the amount of filler DBZ had.

Goku running on the Snake Way fills something of the order of 15 episodes. He even falls in hell and has to start from the beginning in the anime. And that doesn't even take into account the training in King Kai's planet. All this process takes a couple of chapters in the manga.

The five minutes Freeza gives until the explosion of Namek are stretched to about 20 episodes. Goku going Super Saiyan takes an entire episode as well. In the manga it takes one panel.

Even the action sequences are repeated to exhaustion. This scene, when Freeza's and Goku's arms clash, is repeated dozens of times. Piccolo and Supreme Kai staring at each other at the martial arts tournament takes a whole episode. In fact, staring contests are very common.

Everything in the anime is overstated to fill air time. While in the manga the Super Saiyan transformations are instantaneous, in the anime, normally the world is practically destroyed before a character can get his blond hair and golden aura. The Super Saiyan 3 transformation takes forever, for instance, it even blacks out the sky, destroys buildings of cities very far away, and causes lightning storms.

All of this is not even taking the "original" episodes in consideration, like the Garlic Jr. arc and the otherworld tournament arc. Or when Gohan and Krillin arrive at fake planet Namek. Or when the Saiyans destroy a random planet on the way to earth and are shown being able to survive in space, even though they shouldn't be. Or the humans training in Kami-sama's lookout. Or... well, you got it I think.

HNNNNNNNNNNG. I knew it was bad but I every time someone reminds me, I feel like wasted a few months of my childhood. Seriously, the only reason I gave a pass to transformations being so long was because it was cool with the other kids at school. The Freezer fight and everything just made me go "Holy shit. Hurry up. It's been like 3 hours since you said five minutes"

Dragonball was pretty bad about this too. The water from Korin's tower only takes two chapters in the manga. The time between Taopaipai appearing and dying only take about 5 or 6. There were fewer stupid shenanigans with General Blue in the manga.
