So a 40GB PS3 or a Slim would not be able to use the PS2 emulator used in the 80GB PS3?

Because it's not a full emulator. Its a partial hardware solution. The 80GB PS3 has the 'Graphics Synthesis' chip actually on the motherboard but no 'Emotion Engine'. Just the 'Emotion Engine' is emulated. The 60GB US model has both the 'Graphics Synthesis' chip and the 'Emotion Engine' in a single die on the motherboard. So technically there isn't any emulation at all in that. It's literally a PS2 inside the PS3's case.

On the other hand there have been SNES and Mega Drive emulators for the DS so we can always hope....right?

The DS is way more powerful than the SNES and Mega Drive combined. Plus they're both very straight forward simple systems to emulate (well the Mega Drive is anyway). The PS2 is a dual cored 64bit system with two vertex units tied to each core, not to mention the graphics synthesis chip which even Sony themselves struggled to emulate on the PS3 hence it's hardware inclusion in the 60GB and 80GB PS3s.
I had no idea the later models still hard parts of a ps2 in them. I am curious how far the PS2 emulation team gets then. Hopefully they can make a PSX emulator that will run isos off of the harddrive - I dont want to scratch my copy of Team Buddies any more than it is already.
