Sega Genesis vs. SNES!?

i wouldn't say sample-based music is lazy or cheap (i'm a big fan of early hardcore rave music), but it needs to be handled differently than a lot of people working with the SNES handled it. many people used really standard, really bland sample banks. Capcom and Konami generally nailed it, though.

Nintendo made a few slam dunks with it themselves, in Super Metroid, Star Fox, Yoshi's Island, and Kirby Superstar to name a few. Also, don't forget the magic Square was able to work with it.

Good SNES music reminds me a lot of the Amiga sound, which I always loved. I'll take that over C64's SID any time. And it's easier to do? That's win/win.

Lets not confuse the issue with which console had better graphics i believe since both consoles can be considered old it's a moot point anyway.

Also trying to champion the snes for looking and sounding better than the genesis is rather pointless since the snes is newer so it stands to reason it should be better if it had been equal then nintendo wouldn really have been doing their job right now would they.

In short when i want to play an rpg i usually think of the snes first and when i want a good platformer i think of the genesis first.

The Genesis had it's share of really amazing platform games, but I think the SNES still has it beat in that category. The shooters and platformers on the Genesis tend to be its best games, and they do sometimes manage to get more hardcore than their SNES counterparts, and that's why I love my Genesis--but I just can't think of as many of those gems as I can for the SNES. When I think of the Genesis library as a whole, the first thing I see in my mind is a bargain bin full of unlicensed sports games from EA.

Focusing on Ea sport games for the genesis is like thinking of the nes and only to have the crappy pirate games pop up. That is to say in both cases these are the weakest games available for both consoles.

That's funny. I distinctly remember the superior sports games on the Genesis being a big selling point among my friends in the early nineties.

I've never seen entire shelves or bargain bins of NES pirate-coded games without leaving the United States. Shelves 90% full of old EA sports games is a reality even in the "developed" world. Besides, a lot of those sports games were considered good during their time and were popular with a lot of people--it helped to put EA on the map. Their popularity simply hasn't endured with time.

Should have written that a bit better. I meant to say what you did as to how Nintendo and developers from the era should have but a bit more effort into their stuff as the majority of it sounded a tad lazy in general games of the era.

The games are all licensed or else they wouldn't play on the system thanks to the TMSS lockout.

Sega let EA and other developers use their own custom carts if they so chose to.

I had thought EA initially declined to get a publishing license from Sega, and remembered a court battle over bypassing the lockout. I just did some research, and it looks like I was thinking of Accolade (who won said lawsuit). However, it seems EA at least considered not getting a license, and may have badgered Sega into giving them a special price rather than deal with another unlicensed publisher. Very classy.
