I don't know. What do you do when anything else that you buy stops working? Most, if not all, current games can be purchased with an extended warranty.Japhei wrote:This has been a touchy subject for a long time. First off My name is Japhei and most people know me for being a pirate. Lets examine that for a minute. As a member of Echelon and Kalisto when I worked for Babbages , Software ETC and eventually Gamestop. I would take home games sometimes before release rip them and provide them to people to download on the internet. Probally around 1000 retail rips exist online because of me. I took this one step further by buying new Neo Geo MVS kits and using my Xeltek EPROM programmer to dump said Neo Geo MVS games which were then added to unofficial MAME, Nebula or Final Burn emulators. Once again showing the power of the hacking I released unreleased Neo Geo Prototype games as well. After finishing my rape of the Neo Geo I then moved on to CPS2 where I aquired every CPS2 game known to man and dumped everyone. Flash Forward to 2010. I have aquired a image of every Taito Type X 1 and 2 game and have images of every HDD. Now that Blazblue CS is out and about and companies are aware of it. I have the full catalogue of Type X games just waiting to hit the mass send button out to the waiting public.
My question is this. When the game breaks or the HDD drive fails or a game disc is too scratched to run anymore what do you?
And who made it your job to "preserve" all this data? As for the 'backup purposes only' disclaimer, that is the biggest lie outside of 'The check is in the mail', and 'Of course I will respect you in the morning.' It is simply a CYA move that means absolutely nothing. It is the same type thing as the 'for informational or educational purposes only' disclaimer found on most of the old 'philes' floating around about how to make explosives and junk like that.Japhei wrote:Some people call it piracy I call it preservation. Thats why when a Image is released online PIRATES say it is for backup purposes only. The little loop hole that keeps us out of trouble.
Okay, so are you saying that you still have the originals of those 1000 retail rips that you released? And if you do, did you actually buy those that you took home from work before the release date?Japhei wrote:See I can dump and image as many games as I want and when the FED's or whoever kicks in my door. I will pick up a original copy and claim that it was for use to backup a ORIGINAL title.
And I am sure that there are just tons of people who own legal copies of this data that are just waiting for you to provide them with 'backup copies' so that their expensive data is protected.Japhei wrote:Flash Forward to 2010. I wish that people would stop trying to justify their actions with some big 'providing a service for the greater good' or some other BS argument like that. Just come right out and say it, "I copy other people's intellectual property and share it with others with no regard for the rightful owner." See, that wasn't so hard, was it?

Does that mean that I can download whatever data I find on your computer? What about if I were to download some 0s and 1s from your bank account to mine?darthmunky wrote:Nothing should be illegal to download. That is all I have to say and I will always stand by my decision.

Piracy should be supported and even encouraged. It provides free marketing. Many people who pirate things buy them anyway later. Some who wouldn't buy it will download it and maybe buy it later.

And then, of course, there is the majority who will not buy them later because they already have them.illiriks wrote:Piracy should be supported and even encouraged. It provides free marketing. Here is a list of things that are not the same things:Niode wrote:It actually says "you wouldn't steal a car" but the key difference is stealing and piracy isn't the same thing.
- Stealing =/= Piracy
Video games =/= NES games
Standardized tests =/= The SATs
An automobile =/= A Toyota Camry
Mathematics =/= Calculus
An actor =/= Willem Dafoe
A website =/= racketboy.com
Systems: TI-99/4a, Commodore Vic-20, Atari 2600, NES, SMS, GB, Neo Geo MVS (Big Red 4-slot), Genesis, SNES, 3DO, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, NDSi, Wii

I have no sympathy for pirates. I wish there was greater pursuit for them. Not someone that pirates maybe once a year, but those that regularly do so to avoid paying into the industry.
PC gaming has declined for years. It's not because of popularity. The piracy rate has become absurd. Many companies will admit they can no longer create PC exclusive games because of piracy. So this leaves us with games built for console up and released on PC with higher resolutions. This has angered me greatly, as someone that's always been an avid PC gamer. Piracy is even finding a way to affect me because of the fewer and fewer games designed around PC gameplay (RTS, for example).
It's not just big, profitable games people pirate. Piracy hurts small companies and real lives. It's selfish and just goes to show the me-first instant gratification cancer that's slowly taking over society. The most disturbing part of it is that people rationalize and justify it by pointing out it's not physical property they're stealing. So I guess if some company started to release copies of games on the market, but at much cheaper costs, that's ok? I mean, after all, stealing something intangible isn't unethical, right? It's their discs, they simply just downloaded and used the data. Give me a break. Without patent and copyrights that are respected by the law, and punished when violated, the software industry would be crippled.

Yes, that would be an accurate statement as well. "Limewater" does not, in fact, equal "Understands the definition of words." They aren't even the same part of speech, though, so that's an odd comparison to make.Inazuma wrote: You forgot one.
