I agree, although I'm guilty of it myself.Luke wrote:Not trying to be profound, but every once in a while you should reflect on the world that surrounds you. Life might seem mundane at times, but it is pretty amazing how society as a whole and group thinking changes things.
It's become quite apparent to me that we live in a culture addicted to hype. Hasn't always been like that. Not everyone, but most people have turned into shoot from the hip gunslingers that care more about hype than what comes from the hype, be it a product or person. People judge things as "good" or "bad" in the time it takes you to snap your fingers.
It wasn't the announcement of the xbone that made me realize this, but it sure did reinforce it. If an online forum existed in 1989 when the SNES was announced, not sure if there would be a single complaint. People judge a movie that lasts two hours on a thirty second trailer.
Hasn't always been this way. I might come off as arrogant, but I promise I give everything a fair shake. Eh, it's just the older I get, the more sense of entitlement people seem to have, especially kids, and I can't stand it.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I actually had this discussion with somebody a while back. This is not only something I noticed about our culture, but about myself. This is something I've been trying to fix recently, but has been quite difficult for me. I've found that I spend more time being excited about a product coming out, than I do actually using it/playing it. There are several instances where I dedicate all my time reading articles about an upcoming game, but when it comes out all of that seems to go away. The excitement wears off quickly, and sometimes I don't even finish the game I had spent months of my time researching and waiting for.Luke wrote:It's become quite apparent to me that we live in a culture addicted to hype. Going back to classic games has shuffled my priorities around. I can no longer get excited about an upcoming game, if it was released 15 to 20 years ago. This keeps me from wearing myself out before I get my hands on the actual game.
Not only that, but I've also noticed my attention span has greatly decreased. A game can only keep my attention for so long before I get bored with it and quit. My motivation to get up and turn on the system drops rapidly, if I can manage to get any motivation at all. It's not like I'm doing anything better. In-fact, I usually end up watching a "Let's Play" or review of some other random game. This leaves me feeling mildly depressed that I really haven't accomplished anything, and have given up on something that I was genuinely enjoying.

We're all guilty of making snap decisions without any thought, but too the extent and frequency of when people make snap decisions worries me.jinx wrote: This is something I've been trying to fix recently, but has been quite difficult for me.
When I saw the trailer for Gatsby I immediately thought "This looks terrible", but I still gave it a shot because "who knows?". But it's like everyone is a real life J. Jonah Jameson. "Hate it, worst thing ever. Cut it. Love that picture, front page!".
edit* Why does that guy in the Xarelto commercial own a GPS if he refuses to use it? And why is everyone so happy in a-fib related commercials? That's not how you sell heart medication. You show some sad family with their sad dog camped out at a grave site, camera pans to the widow's daughter who asks "Why didn't Daddy take Xarelto?" and the widow weeps and replies with "I don't know sugar. I don't know why".

It is facepalm inducing that every time I watch A New Hope with my son I have to explain that the film isn't an adaptation of Angry Birds Star Wars (with people playing the roles of birds and pigs) but rather the other way around. I refuse to watch additional films in the series with him until he, at minimum, understands this basic point and can watch the film without talking about the game.
