Shmup of the Month Club 2013 (Giga Wing)
Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2013 (Giga Wing)
I did manage to get 8.4 trillion in the arcade version using Stuck. I think that was Stage 5, so if I'd made it to Stage 6, that would have been over 10 trillion.
Once you've learned the levels using one character, it's tough to switch to a different one, because you have to re-learn the stages to an extent. I'll see how high I can go with the Stranger ship, then go back to Stuck or Ruby...

That "overpowered" ship I feel has a balance with its Force Bomb. Does very little damage, only good for canceling bombs. I still say Stuck has the best bomb.Chempop wrote:Hey nice score I knew it was coming.
Now try it without the overpowered secret ship

so how does one access this hidden ship in MAME?
Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2013 (Giga Wing)
You can't, stranger is DC exclusive.

I tried to like this thing - i'm up over a trillion finally, but just not enjoying it. Think i'm prob done for the month. The reflect barrier is consistent, but feels inconsistent, my timing is just poor with it. I use it in place of a bomb often - but it really isn't meant for that, it's meant to be offensive and planned, not a panic move...I just can't convince my brain of this and keep doing the same thing - save bombs / charge my reflect in a panic...die. Super frustrating. Really having trouble seeing bullets on almost every stage as well, they get lost in the medals, or sometimes just too similar to the color of the background. I'll bow out now rather than keep whining. Good luck to the rest of you!

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2013 (Giga Wing)
I like the tension of trying to survive while the reflect is charging, so many close calls... should I bomb... can I dodge another split second more... ARRGH!
Great game, if only some of the music wasn't such crap. Some of it is excellent, but there are a few tracks that really get on my nerves. Curious how the slowdown on the CPS2 board changes the difficulty. I wish I was better against the stage 6 boss, it's such an epic fight but I have to credit feed right now to see much of it.

From what I've read, the missing slowdown in the DC port is made up with them slowing down the bullets that should be moving slower due to slowdown. So, it seems like the DC port will have more consistency, since the bullet speed won't be affected by what is on-screen.
I am quite enjoying this one. I love being out of bombs and having to full-stress dodge (in pretty much every shmup), and Giga Wing gives me short spans of this, with a panic reflect every now and then to help me get out of the tight spots.
The music is pretty poor though. I do like the title music, and some of the music that plays during the character dialogue, but most of the stage music is bleh.

I don't think the scores need to be separated. The Stranger is a special ship and it might have a bit more power on the shot end, but it doesn't have a good bomb and that balances it. Not everyone is using it anyway (just one now as of this update), and notice several good scores with just the regular characters. Unlike Mars Matrix, I'm not seeing any special score differences either.
Yeah, some of the music. Nothing like hearing COME ON! every few seconds. They need to do that character cutscene music in the game instead.
Multiplayer mode also had different character dialogue and interactions based on the pair that you used. That's some serious attention to detail there.
I'm liking this. I will return to DC port next week.

The reason he said up there too makes the DC port perfectly tuned to the arcade, so it is a 1:1 port with the exception of the special ship.dunpeal2064 wrote:From what I've read, the missing slowdown in the DC port is made up with them slowing down the bullets that should be moving slower due to slowdown.
