Drawing magic, by any other name, would still be just as tedious.
I actually half-way like the junction system in FFVIII but I think just a standard magic/leveling up system would've helped the game tremendously.

Yeah, I think I already told you or mentioned it earlier, I attempted to replay FFVIII sometime earlier this year... but my OCD-ness in JRPG's made me continually stock up on magic and everytime something new popped up I just had to keep drawing and drawing. Probably one of the reasons I got bored with it midway into disc 2.
At least I beat it once back in the day though 100% and enjoyed it overall, so I didn't feel bad about putting it down.

I stopped drawing when I realized that casting magic was worthless, so I only needed the magic that was best-in-slot for that particular point in the game. I also realized you really only need a single party member. The limit system was so easily abused; I spent the majority of the game with Squall at 10% health and spammed his limits. And his health and defence were so good compared to the enemy levels (since I would take the shortest path everywhere) that I just steamrolled everything.

From my personal experience, summoning the GFs in-battle is a waste of time as well. If you've got Squall all decked out he could attack 2 or 3 times by the time you could summon a GF.

I honestly abused his limit break ability to death my first time around. You know about that trick right? When your health is in the yellow, repeatedly switch to other party members going back and forth and eventually you'll get the option to do the limit break. Works every time. I grinded on T-Rex's in the training field for awhile doing that.
To be honest though from what my friends experience was last year doing a minimal amount of things, and as I've heard from others, the game is actually easier if you don't level up that much at all. Supposedly, makes sense considering how the monsters even out with you, their magic gets stronger as they level too, etc.
Just realized that's basically what Mr.Popo said. Opa Opa if you're honestly not loving the game to death, maybe just do that and abuse Squall's limit break. lol

That's for chickenwusses.
I actually enjoy the game for the most part. The character design is good (not at the new-age Square-Enix yet), the artwork is fantastic, and the soundtrack is very impressive.
However the junction system takes awhile to get used to, the plot gets a bit convoluted, and the characters are somewhat annoying.
Overall it's a mediocre RPG. Certainly not the worst I've played but once I beat it I'll probably never touch it again.

Agreed. I love everything going for it, but the gameplay is certainly not the best in the series.
I also think you mentioned it earlier, but considering all the Laguna switches, damn did I HATE having to re-organize/junction setups after that happened, which gets pretty frequent sometimes. Very annoying. Should have had an option to save "Junction Setups" or something.
