Re: Games Beaten 2018
The Mario games are like comfort food to me. I may stray from them from time to time but I always return.
Well this "new" game is now 12 years old. Shoulda put a little more thought into that title, huh Nintendo?
New Super Mario Bros. brings the series back to its 2D roots after a long haitus. This is an odd game. On the one hand, it plays beautifully. Controls are perfect, it's easy to pick up and play, and is ultimately fun with a great overall flow and vibe. That said, it's kinda dull. No Yoshi, no flying power-ups. There are many different environments, but all just end up feeling like window dressing. The game's sinfully easy from start to finish, replete with bosses that are an absolute joke.
This ends up feeling like a "zone-out" sort of game. I played it with the TV on in the background, and it's well suited for travel and whatnot. Nothing about it sticks with me. I've probably beaten it about 2-3 times in the past, yet nothing felt "familiar" on this latest playthrough. There's nothing "bad" about it, but it pales in comparison to something like Super Mario Land and its sequel.
Re: Games Beaten 2018
The Wii U installment is the only one in the "New" line I enjoyed, along with the Luigi expansion. Otherwise I feel this line has no self identity at all. Why is it going back to SMB1 aesthetics and design? Feels so backwards and uninteresting compared to SMB3 or SMW, etc. Maybe emulating SMB1 was the point but now it's spawned into a larger series and continues to never innovate, unless you want more horrible ghost house gimmick levels... absolutely hate those. I really despise the art design in these too, it's not like offensive but nothing about these games looks cool to me. Really wish they'd get a serious overhaul.

Re: Games Beaten 2018
Agreed that the Wii U installment is the best. The DS, Wii, and 3DS ones just get all jumbled in my head.
Wonder if we'll see one on the Switch.
(Tangentially related, but I did enjoy Super Mario Run quite a bit, that one at least did something different).
Oh, and New Super Mario Bros. is the first game I've beaten this year that was released within the last 20 years!

The Wii U one is also my favorite by quite a good bit

32. Inherit the Earth (PC)(Point-and-Click Adventure)
33. Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny (PC)(FPS)
Spear of Destiny is the official expansion for Wolfenstein 3D. It features 21 levels (including 2 secret levels), additional bosses and enemies, huge levels, and tons more gunplay, making it a nice add-on to Wolfenstein 3D. Plus, it also gives us more of a look at the minds of ID, because the entire team worked on it with the sole exception of John Carmack, who had chosen instead to focus on a new game engine which would become the basis for DOOM.
So, what does Spear of Destiny give you over Wolf3D? Well, more. More Nazis, more bosses, and more castles, catacombs, and caves to fight them in. And at the end, you find the Spear of Destiny and then must face the Angel of Death in a haunted arena to prove you are worthy to wield it.
Unfortunately, this doesn't make for a massive change in gameplay. There is still a limited number of enemy types, and you'll have seen nearly all by the time you beat level 5 if you managed to find the first secret level. To make up for this, eventually ID just starts throwing tons of them at you at a time, forcing you to mow them down and pray that you're quicker on the draw. The boss fights also don't really add much new: you see a boss, you duck in and out of cover and unload on them while avoiding their shots, which have a nice sound effect to go along since nearly all of them use the chain gun. So if you like Wolf3D, well, Spear of Destiny makes for a nice continuation of its style, but SoD shouldn't be your first foray into this era of ID. Play Wolf3D first and then hit up SoD.
Now for all that I've said, the final level of Spear of Destiny shows an evolution in ID's thinking, and it makes for a mini-step towards the DOOM formula. First, you're now in a cavernous Hellscape with blood pools, skulls, and nasty imagery. Second, you now have unkillable ghosts as monsters wandering the halls; take one down, and it'll respawn a short while later, presaging the enemy resurrection of Nightmare Mode in DOOM. Perhaps most important is that the boss is a giant demon who shoots projectiles that you can sidestep. It's the most interesting boss fight because it's different, but it also feels like you're evading a particularly nasty imp, albeit one who will knock off half your health if he so much as wings you. No, he isn't a tough fight, you just sidestep while unloading, but it still marks a pleasant change from the numerous hit-scan enemies you fight up to this point.
I liked Spear of Destiny. I'd recommend it to folks who have played Wolfenstein 3D and enjoyed it. It's also a nice game for anyone who enjoys this era of FPS, though play Wolf3D first if you haven't.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - PC

I played a few games to get into the "EVO Spirit" (even though I didn't watch any of the actual event this year), so the first two represent that. SFV is still a fun entry in the series, but I still don't have a good sense of where I'd rank it in comparison to the others. I do wish that I didn't have to pay extra money to play as Blanka.
Windjammers was a game I'd always heard about and never played before - but it was on sale for $1.50 a week or two ago and I bought it on a whim. I am glad I did - it is a very engaging take on a pong-like game that oozes with early 90s charm and Neo Geo classiness. I played through Arcade mode a few times (where I fared better than I seem to do online).
I have now spent over 70 hours in the VR version of Tamriel, which is probably twice what I spent with the game on PC way back when I first beat it. This game - and specifically this immersive and astounding version of it - has now become one of my all time favorites - probably a Top 5 favorite video game. I had never played the Dragonborn DLC, and I must say that it is exceedingly better than I thought it might be. I really liked the entire new island to play around on, the story was much more self-contained and interesting than the main game's campaign, the antagonist was more menacing, and a lot of nice little additions to the various systems and abilities were quite welcome. I look forward to going back for more soon.

Re: Games Beaten 2018
I used the Legacy Collection as an excuse to finally beat Mega Man X7. It was less of an ordeal than I was expecting given how awful I am at all forms of 3D platforming, though it was still pretty bad. 3D games sure have come a long way since this mess (not that it was considered good at any point in history). X8 is the only other game in the series I haven't completed, I've always gotten bored of it.
That said, X7 at least felt like they were trying, they just didn't have the experience or any good ideas for bringing Mega Man X to the third dimension. It's not the cynical cash grab romhack that is X6 and I didn't feel utterly miserable after finishing it so it's still better than that game in my eyes. I'm glad I didn't play it back when it was new because the disappointment would have hit pretty hard. I'll likely never touch it again for the rest of my life but it feels nice to have finally finished one of the black sheeps of one of my favorite game franchises.
On the bright side the 3D X games look pretty nice in HD on the legacy collection and I'll be giving X8 another shake soon.
