Good points, but why did Britain give up HK in the first place? Must read up on that.

For the same reason Portugal gave up Macau. Those regions were given to the respective countries by China a good while ago either in exchange for something or as a reward for something, but it was for a set period of time. I think Macau was agreed to be until 1999 and HK until 2000 (or add one year to each).

EDIT: a bit more complicated. Hong Kong had a 99 year lease on parts of it but not all of it, and Macau was more complicated even.
