Yeah, Roald Dahl himself was afraid of exactly that, which is why he never authorized a film adaptation in his lifetime. Henry Selick had to fly to England and personally convince Dahl's widow to let him do it. James was actually my favorite Dahl book growing up and considering how hard it must be to adapt any of his work, I thought Selick did the best job anyone could have. Come to think of it, it might be interesting to see Illumination try their hand at a remake since they did such an awesome job with The Lorax, if only someone there would get the idea for that.prfsnl_gmr wrote:My wife thought that the film adaptation ruined the "spirit" of the book.
What was the last movie you've seen?

Aw man, I love Fantastic Mr. Fox. It's brilliant. One of my favorite movies.
With stop motion animation in the conversational mix, has anyone ever watched Mary and Max? It's been a few months since I've seen it, but its an amazing film. It's funny, sweet, sad, and very emotional all at the same time. It actually made me cry. It's a beautiful film. I watched it on Netflix, I think and immediately hit up amazon and bought the BluRay after watching it.

I love stop motion and I've never heard of Mary And Max. *checks wikipedia* Interesting. I have Aspergers myself, so I'd be curious to see how it's portrayed in the film. The biggest misperception, I think, is that it's an illness or disorder. It's not. Our brains are just wired differently, that's all. I haven't watched it since season one, but on the show Parenthood, Max Braverman is a pretty accurate depiction of someone with Aspergers, so the writers there obviously did their homework. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely check it out.

I haven't been to the theater in what seems like forever.

Merlin's Mystical Shop of Wonders. That was on MST3K though, so that might not count.
Lord of the Flies. We watched that in English class, so that might not count.
So I guess I'll have to say Kamen Rider Agito: Project G4. Every bit as awesome as the show.

I have never spoken with him, but from what I have read Mel Gibson holds abhorrent beliefs. That said, his latest film, Get The Gringo (2012), is totally awesome. My wife and I watched it tonight, and found it to be the perfect accompaniment to chicken tacos and Coronas. If it didn't have Mel Gibson in it, it would have been nearly perfect.
In any event, here is a review that sums up the movie's strengths and weaknesses pretty well:

(Also, the movie is currently available for streaming on Netflix.)

It's a similar situation with Tom Cruise. He's batshit insane, but he still manages to be a fantastic actor, so I give him a pass on the crazy and still go to his movies.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I have never spoken with him, but from what I have read Mel Gibson holds abhorrent beliefs. Doing a bit of research...apparently Mel is so bad that Get the Gringo skipped theaters almost entirely (which is too bad, because it is definitely one of the best action/western/prison break films that I have ever seen).MrPopo wrote:It's a similar situation with Tom Cruise. A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD
The law of diminishing returns certainly applies here. Well, the car chase was pretty damned exciting, but at the same time it looks like it was shot and edited by amateurs. It simply didn't feel like a Die Hard movie. Bruce doesn't even seem like John McClane, rather he's a multiple machine gun toting invincible superhero action God. And his son? He's about as interesting as a saltine.
Of course there is plenty of action, but it's all pretty dull, save the car chase. But there's no real struggle against a mastermind, John and Jack are up against your generic Russians who want to launch nukes. The bad guys are just sorta there; it's nothing personal like with Hans Gruber. A GOOD DAY isn't much fun, but if you want ninety minutes of Bruce Willis shooting stuff, driving stuff, falling from stuff, and landing on stuff this is the movie for you.
