OK, let's talk 970 vs R9 390. :D

970 son. Less power consumption and better drivers. The latter is key. Constant driver updates.

I love my Zotac. The MSI looks nice too. PNY is nice. Stay away from EVGA.

It's not even about the Heroes DLC man. I really really will urge folks to go Nvidia if they can afford it right now because I think the drivers are just so strong.

OK, 970 questions:

1. What about the 3.5gb/4gb controversy? Much ado about nothing?

2. What's wrong with EVGA?

3. Why does the 390 have 8gb of VRAM? Do I need that for... something?

4. Which Zotac do you have?
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

As far as I can make out - yup.

I suppose that if you're planning on playing in 4k that there could be something to think about. I don't know. But you'd have to tax your card so much that the first 3.5GB of VRAM is being pushed before there'd be an issue. To put it another way, I have a 4GB card because I don't think I'll encounter a game (during the life of this build) that will require 4GB. Ya dig?

Another way of putting it is I've had the 970 for just short of a year now, and every game I play is maxed out. And I've played quite a few new releases.

To put it yet another way, when the whole thing came about New Egg offered me a full refund on my 970 if I wanted it. I looked at both AMD alternatives and even considered paying the diff to up to a 980. Y'know what? I couldn't justify either.

Anecdotal, all of this, of course.
2. What's wrong with EVGA?
This is the only 970 that I've heard numerous legitimate complaints on. Not for performance, but for noise. It is apparently infamously loud when it comes to coil whine.
3. Why does the 390 have 8gb of VRAM? Do I need that for... something?
If you do, I haven't found it. Again, maybe for 4k gaming? I don't really know. I haven't investigated that - and I don't plan to in the immediate future. I thought of maybe VR will require more... but the Rift's specs call for a 970/290. So I don't know.
4. Which Zotac do you have?
Here you go sir:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814500362

I believe Jmustang has the same one as well.

I totally recommend it... even if for some reason this model will yield you Assassin's Creed Syndicate or Rainbow Six Siege instead of the Heroes Of The Storm stuff.

(Actually, it looks like all 960's come with Heroes DLC and all 970's come w/ Ubisoft games).

Anyway, back when I bought mine they were almost always out of stock. Like, I'd set up alerts - and I'd get an email that it was in stock at New Egg. And in the 5 mins it took me to log in and hit purchase, they'd be sold out again. I was between the Zotac and the MSI. The only reason Zotac won was because it came in stock long enough for me to buy it first.

I just installed an 8gb 290x and am very happy. I do admit, it is overkill fro my rig since I only game in 1440, not 4k, but the biggest reason I *thought* I needed it was for a heavily modded Skyrim build that was taxing my 3gb 280. I've just figured out how to track my GPU usage in real time and I'm around the 3.5GB mark, so theoretically, a 4gb card would've done the trick just fine.

I think I committed a cardinal sin though in buying the card I upgraded to based primarily on its looks though. I dig the look of XFX's cards as of lately, and I caught one hella good deal on Amazon for it. I snatched it for what a 4gb 290x would've gone for and I couldn't pass it up. I've future proofed my GPU is what I'm telling myself. I really would have loved a GeForce 970, but couldn't find one in my price range at the time. Anyhow, I've never had much problems with AMD. I'm on my third card and don't really have many complaints. I'm sure you'll be happy either way you go.

Anyone have any experience overclocking the 970 and/or 390?

not yet, as I've had no reason to. But the Zotac came with software (Afterburner) that is supposedly really easy to tweak and overclock the card, including saving various OC profiles that you can switch up on the fly.

@Noise - are you on Windows 10? Any weird Windows 10 issues?

I am on Windows 10. I've had no issues at all.

Again, since GeForce seems to kick out new drivers monthly, Nvidia were on top of things.

In fact, even the old mobile Nvidia GPU in my 2011 Alienware got Win10 compatible drivers!

If you are overclocking your GPU, MSI Afterburner the is way to go. It has RivaTuner's OSD built in so you can see check up on VRAM, GPU usuage, etc in game and watch you temp levels.

Small increments and if you don't know what you are doing, just stay away from changing the core voltage and power limit and you can't really do any damage. Just small increments of 10mhz at a time on the core clock, run some stress tests, it works fine, move up another 10mhz. When it crashes I like to drop back 30-40mhz so you know it is stable then run something like 3dMark on an endless loop overnight to make sure it is stable.

Do the same with your Memory Core, but you can jump in 25mhz jumps.

Crank up the fan if you notice higher than average temps, save a profile for higher end gaming and you are away.

If / When you become more knowledgeable on the subject, Power Limits and voltages allow you get get stable at higher overclocks, but in reality I doubt you will find yourself needing to overclock anytime soon. If you can get what you want out of your card, don't overclock it, more so if you are new to it.

I run my CPU (i5 ivy) with a nice 1Ghz overclock (3.4ghz > 4.4Ghz) 24/7 and my GTX770 has a OC profile of +120mhz on the core and +300mhz on the memory (using +12mV on the core voltage w/ 110% power limit). I let it run 12 hours on 3Dmark with everything cranked up and it was fine. I have been running my GPU at those speeds while gaming for well over a year.

On the Linus tech tips forum I am being told that my CX600m is a piece of junk that is likely to either destroy my PC, burn down my house, or cause total protonic reversal ghostbusters-style if I use a 960/380/970/390.

What do you guys think?
