i could never beat lightening force. it always rocked my socks.

just out of curiosity, how does bloodlines rank in terms of favorite castlevania game?

LF is a damn hard game, that's for sure. The thing that kept me playing it was that it was actually fun too. Which speaks volumes really, since I'm not a fan of shmups in general.

It was no picnic though. It took me several days, and when I finally beat it I did so on my very last credit. No 1 credit runs for me.

Bloodlines is most definitely my #1 favorite Castlevania. I absolutely loved that game. Granted, I haven't played Rondo Of Blood yet, (though I will very soon, its on my summer game challenge list) but other than that I don't think anything stands to dethrone it.

Rondo Of Blood is pretty hard, I'm not lying, it gets very frustrating. It's still a pretty good game though.

X-Men Arcade - XBOX Live

X-Men Arcade was a real blast from the past. I used to play this game in the arcade with friends whenever I had the chance. It’s a fun beat-em-up, but the character selection is rather small at only six characters when you consider the vast array of X-Men characters. Still, six characters is more to choose from than many other beat-em-up games. My only real complaint with X-Men arcade is how easy it was on normal difficulty. I had to turn up the difficulty to keep from becoming bored by the game.

A nice touch was the ability to play the Japanese version of the game which offered power-ups which weren’t implemented in the English release. Additionally, if you have Xbox Live, you can play online with up to five other players. Of course, you could also have your friend grab an Xbox controller and play locally as well. Despite the game’s low difficulty, it still felt great to hear “Welcome to die!” and kick the crap out of Magneto with a group of other players after all these years.

Dark Arms Beast Buster 1999 – NGPC

My thoughts on this game have been well documented and been submitted for an upcoming Racketboy article so you’ll just have to wait. :P (I like this game a lot!)

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune – PS3

I borrowed Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune from a friend who pretty much insisted that I borrow the game. I wasn’t all that interested but had heard enough good things about the sequel that I figured I should give the first one a try beforehand. The game turned out to be very fun. The game was far more cinematic in nature than I expected. It was sort of like playing through an Indiana Jones movie, which was pretty engaging. The characters were interesting enough to get me to care about them (well maybe not the love interest – she was a tad annoying), and the story was simple enough to remain interesting without getting in the way of the gameplay.

However, the third-person shooting segments were too frequent and long for my taste. They were fun, but I grew tired of doing the same thing every few seconds. The platforming aspect of the game is what really kept me playing because I hadn’t experienced anything quite like it in a game before. It was amazingly fluid in most climbing situations and I was always looking forward to what new obstacle the game might throw at me. The section of the game which sealed the deal for me is the point where the game becomes somewhat survival horror-ish. That pushed me to the point where I recommend this game to anyone looking for PS3 exclusives.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – PS3

Upon returning Uncharted to the friend who lent the game to me, he reached into his backpack and pulled out the second game, saying I had to try it out. I don’t expect sequels to be as good as their predecessors, but Uncharted 2 was a definite improvement in several ways. Naughty Dog had managed to take their good game and turn it into a great one. The story was more interesting, the game was more cinematic, there was greater diversity in the environments, there were both old and new characters who played significant roles in the story progression, there were new toys to play with, new enemies to face, and most an all new online multiplayer mode.

The multiplayer in Uncharted 2 actually blew my mind. I did not think that the level of control available in the single player game could be implemented into an online multiplayer mode with several players running, gunning, and climbing all over maps. It is one of the most addictive multiplayer portions of a game I have played in years and feels very fresh given all the first person shooter multiplayer modes I’ve played in recent years. This game was the most fun I’ve had on the Playstation 3, and I have had a lot of fun with PS3 exclusives.

Infamous – PS3/PSN

Remember the whole Playstation Network hack debacle from a little while ago? I bet you sure do. One of the games I downloaded was Infamous, figuring it was one of the fullest experiences offered by the Welcome Back program. I generally get tired of sandbox games after a while. I’ve hardly picked up Prototype since I beat it, I haven’t played any Grand Theft Auto games in years, and I was bored of Red Dead Redemption in less than an hour. Yet somehow Infamous was different. It was so wonderfully different that I actually was compelled to play through it twice in a row, once as good, and then as evil on the hardest difficulty before I was awarded the Platinum trophy for the game (although that can be attributed quite a bit to luck).

You’re probably wondering how exactly Infamous was different. It’s actually a little difficult to say. It was definitely more fun than any other sandbox game I’ve played but it’s hard to say why. The powers in Prototype were more diverse and you had a lot more you could do including utilizing weaponry and vehicles, but it was still more fun to run around fighting enemies in Infamous, which was more focused on third-person shooting (Prototype seemed more focused on combat). While the story in Infamous wasn’t fantastic or anything it was more interesting than other sandbox games I’ve played through fully and the ending genuinely surprised me. Since this game was given away free to so many gamers recently, it will probably remain very low in price for quite some time. If it sounds interesting to you, then it’s a game worth picking up for real low cheap.

Streets of Rage 2 HD – PSN

As a temporary Playstation Plus member (due to the Welcome Back package) I was able to temporarily download this for free. I played Streets of Rage all the time in the Genesis 6-pack when I was younger and still pick it up from time to time, but never actually tried the sequels. I should have. Streets of Rage 2 was a blast to play through cooperatively online and locally with a friend. There was also an online versus mode but every time I started to win the other player would quit the match so that my win didn’t count. I found this rather unsportsmanlike and was surprised that every single person I connected to via quick match did the same thing. Although the game is called HD, it really doesn’t look any better than an actual Genesis game on my HDTV, which is a little disappointing. Even so, it was fun to play and being able to get a co-op partner online when none are available locally is a pretty nice feature.

Hell yeah Thunder Force IV. I was impressed to see you finished it as well. 8) , did you also believe level 8 was the final stage when you first played it? Haha...

And yeah, took me several days as well when I first completed it, but it was damn rewarding.

I just realized I've never beaten Bloodlines, but I love it. I think since I'm in the mood for shorter playthrough-the-whole-thing kind of games right now I might try and play that again soon.

I didn't think stage 8 was the last (at that point I was ready for anything to happen, heh) but I did briefly (and stupidly) consider that stage 5 might have been, considering how epic it was. Then the ships joined up and I was like holy shit!

Speaking of stage 8, that area pissed me off. Those stupid robots killed me twice before I figured out that I was supposed to destroy the dispensers they come out of. I also hated the boss of that level. He kicked my ass a few times. Stupid, fuckin' weird ass bug thing...

That was the only stage I didn't really care for though. The rest of the game is just awesome in every way.

You really should tackle Bloodlines. I fell in love with it. So good.

I seriously think that's all I'm gonna accomplish this summer

Games in italics have been beaten in previous years.
Games that have an underlined x followed by a number shows the number of times I have beaten them this year. (example: x3)

    Red Dead Redemption (PS3)

    *Updated* (Again)Demon's Souls (PS3) x3
Finished my 3rd playthrough (NG++) a few days ago. I then proceeded to finish about half of NG+++ so I could get the last trophy I needed. Im offically marking this one as 100% complete, though there is still technically a few outstanding items to collect and small tasks to do. Each new game plus ups the difficulty too, up to NG(7+). I would like to finish all of them at some point, so I will be revisiting this later this year most likely.

    A few stats for you all (as of when I got the platinum);
    Soul Level - 190
Total Deaths - 368 (many intentional)
    Total Time - 77:53

    Dead Space: Ignition (PSN)
    Dead Space 2 (PS3)
    Costume Quest (PSN)
    Blueberry Garden (PC Download)
    Donkey Kong (NES)
    Donkey Kong 3 (NES)
    Donkey Kong Jr. (NES)
    Golf (NES)
    Mega Man 2 (NES)
    Mega Man 4 (NES)
    Kororinpa: Marble Mania (Wii)
    Mega Man 6 (NES)
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard (PS3)
    Tomb Raider Underworld (PS3)
    The Conduit (Wii)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
    Red Steel (Wii)
    Puzzle Agent (PC Download)
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GCN)
    Portal (PC Download)
    Hamsterball (PSN) x2
Blue Toad Murder Files: Episode 1 (PSN)
    Portal 2 (PS3)
    The Path (PC Download)
    Tag (PC Download)
    Narbacular Drop (PC Download)
    Sin and Punishment (Virtual Console)
    Bubble Bobble (NES)
    Condemned 2: Bloodshot (PS3)
    Uno (PSN)
    Penumbra: Overture (PC Download)
Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box (PS3)

    *New*Mirror's Edge (iOS)
My friend recently gave me his old Ipod Touch and EA just so happened to have a sale on so I bought some stuff. This being my first experience ever with iOS gaming. I was never convienced that touch only gaming is very vaible in the long term in terms of both controls and games. I thought iOS might only be good for minigames and nothing of more meaty-ness. And while I was greatly impressed with how well Mirrors Edge controlled it still had enough issues; most notably inputs in quick succession would often get dropped; to confirm my thoughts on touch controls. But maybe I just suck at touch controls, I don't know. On the other hand it also proved that the many minigames that plague and clog up the app store are not all that iOS gaming can offer.

As for the actual gameplay, it was fantastic. I was not sure how well such a unique platformer would translate into a much more traditional one, but luckly whoever developed the iOS version did not get caught up trying to emulate the console / pc exprience, nor did they just try and make a regular, balnd platformer. What they ended up achieving is another unique experience that still manages to capture the essence of its bigger sister, the flow.

In both the iOS game and the console / PC game, momentum is essential to maintain the flow. If you can build your momentum, find the right line and preform everything correctly you can fly through a level with ease. Getting to that point is no short task though, you have to 'get in the zone' or 'feel the flow' so to speak, and even then, if you do not have mastery of the mechanics and memory of the levels you have a tough challenge ahead. I was amazed that the iOS game could achieve the exact same feeling of acomplishment as its bigger counterpart for getting in the flow and succeeding.

But most important of all. I bought this game in the vain hope that my measly little dollar will one day help fund development of Mirrors Edge 2.

    *New*Darkest of Days (PC)
Im tired because I haven't slept and I have nothing good to say about this game, so unless someone really wants to know my thoughts on this one (if so, let me know, and Ill do a write up later), im just going to say this:

I payed a dollar for this game. I think I over paid.

Total: 36

Up next?
Been playing the Uncharted 3 Beta. For things that I can actually beat, I just double dipped on Beyond Good and Evil so I plan to revisit that (its one of my favourite games). I am also playing Dead Space on iOS (its a unique game, not a port), and since its free with PS+ for the time being I think I will finally beat Sonic 2 which I have never done.

out of all the shmups on the sega cd, this MIGHT be my favorite. if definitely is a toss up between this, lords of thunder, and keio flying squadron. FYI, keio is pronounced kay-o, not key-o.

the only thing i didn't really like about the game was the small enemy fire. most, if not all, enemies all shot little red dots and it was sometimes a pain in the ass trying to watch out for these when the action got a little crazy.

and i did beat the game on easy.

i really like bloodlines. but, i also really like the original.

i, too, haven't played rondo of blood. i have heard that dracual x on the snes is kind of a shitty port of it and kind of a different game all together. at some point i would like to buy a turbo duo and rondo of blood and give the game a whirl.
