Cloud saves have nothing to do with persistent DRM checks.
some bright news for long term playability:

That cloud save just might be a hidden lock of sorts? Not saying it is, just a potential that might be exploited in a mandated to keep playing console bios update patch. I think the Bios required update patch is the biggest concern, what "rules" are set today can have easily be modified tomorrow. This could be good or really bad for one who has invested heavily in a given system.
Hopefully the Kotaku article will get a lot of hits, especially from Microsoft. Based on the track record of existing DRM DLC games on consoles and the limits of support, I won't hold my breath from their response in that article. They have to give a right answer even if not 100 percent positive what will happen later just to reassure the public.
I am reflecting my concern based on the PS2 which can no longer download patches for Action Replay since the Sony server is down. Fortunately I kept the latest backed up on a few memory cards. The same issue with Original Xbox for DLC maps which cannot be backed up and no longer available. Not sure if the Gamecube had any of the older DLC.
How are WiiU owners faring, any issues if leaving the console offline for say a month? Do all games including purchased DRM still work long term without an online connection? Not talking about online game play of course, just a verify that the games will always run offline.

They did? News to me. The PS3 was pretty close at first when it had built in hardware (then software) backwards compatibility. Did MS ever actually promise that
all oXbox games would be playable on the 360?
When they say Xbox games will be backwards compatible with Xbox 360, then I do indeed assume they mean
all games. They didn't say
some Xbox games will be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 afteral...

CRTGAMER, I can't make heads or tails of your post. No other console has had the same DRM, Cloud, or always-on type of stuff the Xbox One will have, so comparisons to PS2 and the like are pretty hard to see.

I'm just reflecting on the overall support of DRM/DLC of the older consoles which pretty much dies as a newer console takes over.
Right now its on the table that the Xbox requires the 24 hour authentification, I suspect all the next gen consoles will have this as well in some form or other. Just going by announcements and various sites are not enough. Some things to consider before placing a preorder on any untested system that may have unknown good or bad features.
How much a new console will "lock in or out" will not be absolute until one can see first hand. Even then, future mandated Bios updates can change that.

Wait, so even though the Wii U
doesn't have this and Sony has said they
won't require it for PS4 (and made a big deal about it), I shouldn't preorder either because it may turn out that, in some hypothetical future, they will change everything and start requiring it?
That's some uber-paranoia, if I understand you correctly. Besides, preorders can always be canceled if something happens to change my mind. Right now I suspect there will be enough games at launch for each the Xbox One and the PS4 for me to want one on day one, and if I
hadn't preordered I'd likely not have much chance of getting it then.

There were bright points in those bullshit deflecting answers related to long term playability?
Kind of early to talk about the end of the generation about whether games will stop working? No, fuck you. That's something that needs to be known before you buy into the console. That's not a 'just buy a bunch of stuff and hope for the best' situation. Not the way the system is designed? That's either a bold faced lie, or Larry has no fucking clue what's going on. Right now we've been told that games will not work if you haven't checked in during the last 24 hours. Unless we're specifically told that can be turned off later, there's no reason to believe it ever will be. Of course they'd want to keep it under wraps if it is possible since the possibility means it will be hacked to get around it. The faint rumors that military might be allowed to not check in might be bullshit or might be true, which would also lead to hacking it.
If banning won't make you lose access to your games, what exactly are you banned from? Even if you were unable to message people through XBL, games, or use voice chat, you could still harass people by being a dick in multiplayer. Or would you only be able to play single player stuff? The "absolutely not" answer actually creates more questions if it is true.
Excellent "why couldn't inserting the disc be a failsafe if no online connection" question. The upside of being connected is access to your games anywhere? Because inserting a disc is so fucking hard, especially when you aren't connected. Carrying a game disc to your friends house is so difficult. How on earth did we manage taking cartridges to a friend's house in the dark ages?
When my mom or my dad buy a game it's automatically in my library? This could be cool if your parents are divorced if it will be allowed, but I'd hope that most people's parents are still together and living under the same roof, therefore the disc is on a shelf somewhere.
"Are you going to change anything about the XBone after PS4 reveal?" He then proceeds to answer with a low key no and then deflect with big exciting words about games.

Wait, what? Sony already said that PSN content from PS3
won't be usable on PS4:
http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/21/sony-psn-games-wont-transfer-to-ps4/
Yep, gotta keep that PS3 around for awhile!!
But will the same PSN content on PS3 be available on PS4? The ps2/psx library is very important to me, after all ... This is a retro gaming site

The last time I tried to take a game to a friend's house I was attacked by wolves and barely escaped with my life. With the Xbox One I still would have been able to play the game at his house afterwards.

You should try sneeking by when the prison riots and everyone escapes.
