I know you were probably thinking of modern PSN/XBLA games and whatnot, but there are even ROMs that are tough to find. Took me forever to find the disk images for the Tandy version of Contra, I've only found one site that has them. Also, many versions of old computer games haven't been "cracked" yet, so even if you download them they won't be playable unless you have the codes to bypass the copy protection (and a lot of that stuff isn't online either).

Hard to tell what the rarest game in my collection is. I guess Dice Puzzle for the Atari 2600 would be up there. Plus I have quite a few demos that are probably pretty hard to find.

On steam there are some titles that are considered "rare" but usually its stuff that was delisted or only available for a short time. I would imagine the prototype games from the Humble Double Fine Bundle are pretty rare.

I suppose some versions of digital games could considered rare, because services like Steam tend to update everything automatically. For example, the recent (and excellent) Volgarr The Viking had noticeable differences to its second stage in the first few released versions compared to the latest one. I have those early versions because I helped Kickstart the game and I have a link to download the game DRM-free, and I grabbed those versions as they became available, but they're not downloadable anymore.

Of course early versions are mostly a curiosity since the game itself is still available, but I imagine in some cases they could actually be preferable to the latest official releases, for a myriad of reasons.

Wow, I didn't know they made color Game & Watches.

I so want at least one in my collection.

There is Codename Gordon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codename:_Gordon

The Free, 2D, side scroller, half life 2 game. Valve took it off of Steam, but you can still get it:

"The game was taken off of the Steam Store because of issues with the website banner built into the game. The original developers (due to their bankruptcy) allowed the domain to expire, and it was purchased for advertising use. This led to the site containing links to pornographic content and viruses. [3] The game is still obtainable through Steam in a way that is considered a secret. All one has to do it enter steam://install/92 in the URL bar on any web browser and follow the message prompts."

My rarest game would probably be my Nightmare in the Dark cart for Neo-Geo MVS. It's precious to me.
