The percents look to be similar. Spanish Flu was compounded by war time (and post-war) conditions, trench war fair, & full train cars. There was also a lack of common public health knowledge. Unfortunately, what we're facing today can cause permanent scarring to lungs & potentially lifelong problems. My lungs are scarred due to battling pneumonia 3 times as a kid. 20+ years later it makes me more susceptible to upper respiratory infections & bronchitis. It's clearly visible on scans & xrays.

1720 - “The Great Plague of Marseille” 100K deaths (last significant bubonic plague outbreak)

1820 - the first cholera pandemic, 100K deaths (also saw Yellow Fever outbreaks)

1918-1920 - Spanish Flu, up to 100 million deaths.

2020 - COVID19 currently at 10.5K deaths as of 3/20/20

Work has decreed this week that the (very vulnerable) residents are staying home now. That's great. A week late, but great.

But at the moment they're still insisting that the workers still have to come in unless they have a doctor's note. Considering that 90% of what I and my coworkers do can be done at home, I find this ridiculous. Seems they've basically decided that until someone gets sick or the state forces them, that they're going to keep us there as long as they legally can.

Sometimes I really hate that place.

Similar story in my workplace. You might recall that I mentioned a series of meetings a week ago. Since then, we've been getting daily updates that all amount to, "be prepared to work from home, but not yet." Which is starting to look irresponsible. We have a number of elderly people working here, and they're still required to come into work like the rest of us. We have been fully prepared to telework for a solid week now, and yet we are all still here in the office.

I guess they're waiting for us all to get sick first.

I live in New York City, so this has had a major impact on my life, with the dense population and most people (including myself) living in apartment buildings. I have to be careful, even in the common areas of the building.

I'm used to commuting into work everyday on the subway system, but since my organization closed our office until further notice, I've been couped up in my apartment for about a week. I'm glad they closed though, as I was getting really anxious and nervous taking the train in for the days I went in last week. I was able to buy N 95 respirator masks and wore gloves on the train when I had to go into the city. I'm not used to working from home, so it's been an adjustment for me but I feel lucky that I have a job where I can work from home.

Grocery wise, I normally would pick up a few things on a daily basis after my train ride home, but I left the apartment last weekend to go shopping at 7 AM. Luckily I was able to get enough food for a few weeks and avoid a crowd, but with the virus spreading here, I'm nervous about making another trip. I may try to use an online grocery delivery service, which I haven't done before.

My girlfriend lives about 25 minutes away, but we're both taking this seriously and we haven't been able to hang out in about two weeks. We're using FaceTime to chat a few times a day, and may try that Netflix Party browser extension, to watch a movie together this weekend. I definitely miss her, and hope things will return to our old routine eventually.

Also, I had to cancel a trip to visit my mom and sister about two weeks ago. I hadn't seen either of them since the holidays, but I did not want to get infected down in the city and then pass it on to my mom or sister, while visiting them upstate. I would feel terrible if that happened, so I decided not to go. My sister is a doctor at a hospital, so I'm definitely worried for her, but I know she will take the proper precautions to protect herself.

I'm glad to read that Nemoide tested negative, and emwearz, thank you for all the work you are putting in at the store. I hope that everyone is able to stay safe and healthy, and I hope for those of us who have had our routines disrupted, that we can go back to some sense of normalcy in a few months.

One of my coworkers saw a teen by the side of the road selling toilet paper earlier this week. She said she pulled up and asked him how much he was selling it for-

She said she felt bad for him so she gave him a buck. When she told her friend, he didn't believe there was a kid hocking toilet paper on the side of the road.
