Are you referring to the bonus coins needed to get into the lost world levels to get the true ending? If so, then the third game does the exact same thing. Actually the third game requires you get all the DK coins and Banana Birds to get the true ending as well.Tanooki wrote:I found DKC2 to be the worst of the set, f those stupid coin requirements to proceed. Lava Lagoon, Red-Hot ride, Target Terror, Gusty Glade, Windy Well, Castle Crush, Toxic Tower, Jungle Jinx, and the infamous Animal Antics (there might be more). I'm not sure why DKC3 gets a bad rap for having gimmicky levels when DKC2 had them as well. Perhaps because those levels in 3 pop more?

I spent a little time trying to find the lamest Super Nintendo related ads I could find. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Let's see somebody beat these, there's got to be even worse out there.

^ That was a sticking point for some time since it was SNES exclusive for a solid year.

Maybe I'm forgetting but I recall going a couple worlds or so into the game and being blocked by a gate requiring coins to go further into the game. Since I detest collection based stuff other than say 100 whatever overall to get a 1UP, I didn't do that. Drove me up the wall having to go back to put up with annoyances to get coins to pay a toll booth. I never finished DKC2 pretty much that being I believe the reason why. In all fairness I can't stand games that do what you said too either, true endings are true bullshit as usually the amount of dedication to go into it sucks.strangenova wrote:Are you referring to the bonus coins needed to get into the lost world levels to get the true ending? I remember buying N64 Mischief Makers and so called finishing it to get only around 1/2 the ending, then seeing I needed these insane to get gems, bagged a few more, got fed up with the rest and ended up never seeing the ending until youtube had it some year later. As far as I'm concerned I earned the ending playing every stage.
Re: The SNES and you, 25 years of SUPER POWER!
Man I can't remember how I even got my SNES as I rocked a NES for so so long. My main memories with SNES were great BOF II moth boss, fishing, Nina. FFIII crying to my dad to buy the 89.99 cart, losing my virginity (must of had this for awhile). Hitting level 105 of ZAMN, Secret of Mana's beauty which being a turn based RPG player SOM was one of the only ARPGs I ever fell in love with (next being Alundra, F Zelda games) let's see Mystic Quest easy and simple but idk magical for me, Sim Ant because I like nature, science, strategy, curiosity. Young Merlin too, I know you ask why but then I was able to buy it with bday money or whatever and it was the only game I could afford probably so I had to play it, found it charming and interesting but certainly abit tough. Street Fighter basically kept me from needing to go to arcades.
Was a weird era for me as I was growing into teens, skateboarding to be pro was becoming my ambition, certainly started to enjoy female company more, chilling with my boys, fighting, getting stoned being a teenage delinquent so on and so forth. Kinda towards the end of SNES I was out of it sorta, I did bounce back immediately once PlayStation hit so there was a small brief moment gaming was an after thought but still a hobby.

If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

I swear I recall a US version of this spot. Back then and even now it looked like an older woman on the right. Seems like subtle threesome gamer nerd porn. Mother daughter thing going on there.Exhuminator wrote:![]()

Sounds fun to me.
It's hilarious that even Nintendo were in on these suggestive ads.

None of the DKC games had any required collecting to beat the game.Tanooki wrote:Maybe I'm forgetting but I recall going a couple worlds or so into the game and being blocked by a gate requiring coins to go further into the game. ENDING SPOILERS!
In DKC2, you need the bonus room coins to pay a toll to access the levels of the Lost World. Each level is 15 coins. You could ignore the Lost World and still beat the main game without having to collect anything. Beating all of the levels of the Lost World opens up a second K. Rool fight, and beating him in the Lost World gives you the second ending. I wouldn't call it the "true ending." If you don't collect everything it's not like you only get the "bad ending." The two endings are chronologically different from each other. You beat the main game (again, no collecting required) to rescue Donkey Kong. DK uppercuts K. Rool who lands in the water and gets attacked by sharks. Then you get the standard DKC ending with Cranky talking to you, the cast of characters and the credits. When you fight him in the Lost World, he shakes off the water, seaweed and starfish on him and you fight him again. This ending shows him sailing away with his island exploding/sinking. That's it, no credits or anything.
I received this game the Christmas it came out, I can't tell you how awesome it was when my brother and I finally beat K. Rool in the Lost World. Watching that secret ending (which is really just a few seconds long clip) was worth the price of admission.
DKC3 is much the same. You can beat the main game without having to collect anything. You rescue Donkey and Diddy, and you get the main game ending with the cast of characters and roll credits, just like the past two games. In three, you also need bonus room coins to unlock the levels in the Lost World. Beating all the levels in the Lost World allows you to fight K. Rool for a second time. This time, beating K. Rool in the Lost World only gets you a DK coin. You need all the DK coins to get hte final vehicle from Funky Kong. With that vehicle, and as well as finding all the banana birds, allow you to go somewhere on the overworld map and free the mama banana bird. This will show you the final ending. Again, this last ending doesn't roll credits or anything. It's just a bonus if you want it.
The secret additional endings are completely optional, but I can understand wanting to see them without wanting a collect-a-thon. I never cared about that aspect as a kid. It was a way to keep playing the game long after you already rolled the credits. For those that want the extra endings without having to collect everything, Rare made it easy. In DKC2, you can get all 75 bonus room coins in under a minute in the first level of the game (YouTube video). In DKC3, it's even easier. You just enter a cheat code on the file select screen, then enter a water fall on the world map to get all the bonus room coins (YouTube link). These two cheats were pretty much common knowledge back then. They were in GamePro and whatnot. And if you didn't read any mags, the kids at school would fill you in. I still have the clipping from a GamePro mag that shows how to do the DKC2 cheat.

Re: The SNES and you, 25 years of SUPER POWER!
Pulled the SNES out Sunday afternoon, plugged it into one of my CRTs and fired up Mario World. All the sudden my wife came by asking when I was making dinner. Yep 4 hours gone to the SNES in a blink.
