For my money, it's better than Xenoblade. A relatively short, 30-hour action-RPG experience. Change your attack method to manual, though. It gives a lot more control over your character.

I don't want to set up ridiculous expectations or anything, but it was one of the few games that started eliciting some of the same feelings I have about Chrono Trigger.

Exhuminator is right, though, there are some technical shortcomings, and if you don't explore thoroughly, you can miss some side chapters, so be aware of that. It's not a game that requires a guide, but it might be good to keep one on hand just to reference and make sure you're not missing character-building segments. Pretty much all of them are worthwhile. And it's definitely not a terribly difficult game, especially when you can grind so rapidly, so I guess it has that in common with Trigger as well.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Definitely check a guide so you don't miss that stuff. The game's short enough without missing entire chapters of unique material.

I love all 3 of the Operation Rainfall Wii RPGs. I'd rank them (from favorite to least) The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower. They're all amazing must haves for Wii owners and JRPG enthusiasts.

Maybe we could improve on Gamespot's list by taking a slightly different approach. What are the most historically important games to the broad field of the JRPG? What games need to be played to understand the development and evolution of the genre?

Within a set number of games, such as the 26 number they used, or with some other system of organization?

I have the feeling this 26 number came from them trying to get to 25 and not being able to do it. I think we should start trying to come up with 25 and then see what happens.

I finished Last Story and Pandora's Tower and started playing both NG+'s whereas I got bored and gave up with Xenoblade about halfway through.

Xenoblade was all about grindy wanderings and endless warcraft style side-quests, whereas the other 2 had much more likeable characters and compelling narratives.

Xenoblade also had an amazingly huge and beautiful world that just made you think: "damn, why isn't this in HD as you played it"...to the point where I just figured I'd wait for an HD remake.

You might be waiting the rest of your life for that. But you could play it using Dolphin and have everything nice and HD.

Should that just be its own thread though? Or is this specific enough to this case?
