It's okay. I still love you and tell everyone how awesome you were for your awesome secret Santa gift last year. Your shenmue album plays like an ear tickling from an angel with a foot fetish.

That sounds really gross to me for some reason.

I do think DSH comes across as aggressive to folks who maybe don't appreciate academic arguments and debate. And really, if you think about it, debate IS aggressive. It's point/counter-point. It isn't mean. It isn't derogatory. It can be insulting, though, especially when one person is in a position to use the rules of debate as a lever and the other person isn't sticking to a strict logical position.

But here's something, Exhuminator, that you're doing which is common and most people also do (including myself, from time to time) which turns out not to be correct: opinions are not equal. If two random Joes happen to meet on the street and disagree about some mundane topic, OK, it's probably safe to agree that their opinions are roughly equivalent. This isn't the case with something like this. DSH says he has studied feminist theory. I believe him. He has likely read some of the seminal works of feminist theory. Does it mean he knows everything about feminism? Unlikely. But unless you are also an academic who has studied feminist theory, you likely haven't read as many of the seminal works as he has, have likely not discussed those theories as rigorously in a controlled setting as he has. In that case, DSH is more an expert on the subject than you. And while feminism is unlike something like math, where an answer is right and wrong, some opinions are better supported than others. I would not consider both opinions equal. An expert's opinion, assuming it isn't based on strictly false information or assumptions, is worth more than a non-experts. The non-expert's opinion isn't worthless, but it is worth a lot less to others than it is to the owner of those opinions.

And all those logical fallacies? Those apply to fuzzy areas like feminism and philosophy as well as math and science. In fact, philosophy and math both use many of the same logical structures. So if someone relies on those logical fallacies in an informal argument, well, that argument is worth less when compared to a more formal argument that avoids them. While my opinions and arguments are very important to me, if I'm arguing with a subject expert and I'm relying on logical fallacies and/or unsupported statements, I can't expect my opinion to be worth a damn to anyone else who's not me. And I've been burned by that, because I am not a good debater. I often don't support my arguments well and I've fallen victim to logical fallacies (like most other humans on earth).

One last thing.
I raised a beautiful young woman, who is well adjusted in society, and wouldn't let a man mistreat her for anything in the world.
Because of your incorrect comma placement, this sentence states that YOU wouldn't let a man mistreat her, not that she wouldn't let a man mistreat her. I'm glad you specified later that what you typed here wasn't what you meant, because it didn't look good as written above. (Just remove that comma-separated phrase and you are left with "I raised a beautiful young woman and wouldn't let a man mistreat her...")

I should add that, despite the fact that I agree with DSH, my opinion is also not equivalent to his. Even though we end up at similar conclusions, his path there is more informed. Therefore my concurring opinion is a lesser opinion, as it is less well-informed.

Threads like this are why half the community has quit the board. From the start this thread felt like bait to me, how the OP could not have seen this coming is completely beyond me. That's all I'll add to this.

I don't believe that for a moment.

It's an important issue I wanted to bring up. That some people will inevitably have a predictable response isn't evidence that the conversation isn't worth having, or that the topic isn't worth discussing. Quite frankly, there are some folks who've said things in here that were interesting to me and weren't the distraction the thread became. If anything, the way threads like this tend to go is simply more evidence that our community (not just RB, but gaming as a whole) has a lot more work to do to be better than we are.

I agree with Xeogred.

I agree with this too.
marurun wrote:Because of your incorrect comma placement
The sentence was grammatically correct. It is true that the sentence was phrased in such a way that two interpretations were possible. That's not uncommon with English sentences, especially when read as text, without intonation or inflection available. Since I realized that was the case there, I clarified it later. As you yourself previously noticed:
marurun wrote:I'm glad you specified later that what you typed here wasn't what you meant
Which means you did recognize that I already realized there was a problem, and despite the fact I previously fixed it, you still took it upon yourself to point it out anyway. That sort of behavior suggests an agenda. But I'll give you the benefit of a doubt.

Here's something else I agree with:

The only way I'll continue to debate in this shitshow thread is if it becomes a rap battle.

Please.

Every mainstream gaming forum is down on activity and new membership.
-More forums.
-Gaming groups on social sites.
-Soft members who run off when their opinion isn't validated.
