I have a sneaking suspicion that the 7800 keeps coming up because many of us use it to play our 2600 games. I haven't had an actual 2600 hooked up in years. Thus, it all blends a bit to feel like "one system." But I certainly agree - it is ultimately a completely different beast and is decidedly third gen.

The homebrew scene is certainly intriguing and I'll admit that $$$ is the main reason I haven't explored it. Many of these games are $30+ and for that price I could buy something like 10 old retail Atari carts. But I do plan on getting some homebrew carts eventually; those other Adventure titles are especially intriguing. What's neat is that the latest Flashback systems include a healthy dose of homebrew games - for instance, Mecha-8 is on the Coleco one. Amazing.

(oh and there is a great home console port of Scramble from back in the day - but it's on Vectrex )

So.... I want an Intellivision.

Which model do I want?

I don't know if it matters, honestly. Unless you collect hardware variations shoot for whatever is cheapest and in the best condition. I got mine locally a few years ago for $50. Came with 40 games! getting tougher to find deals like that. It's a great system - enjoy!

I just got the Intellivision Flashback because they're trying to get rid of their old Plug 'N Plays at my Dollar General and had it marked down to 70% off.

I don't think it's convinced me to stop being a 2600 fan yet but there's some good stuff included. Intellivision does have its own feel to it, sort of crisp and polished in comparison to Atari, it's hard to explain. I haven't gotten to dig into it much yet so maybe I'll have more to say later.

It also looks really classy compared to the ColecoVision one, but I guess the ColecoVision was never the prettiest thing in the first place. The two Flashbacks share a shelf with my Atari 2600 Jr. as my tiny shrine to the 2nd gen.

Can you plug a Sega Genesis controller into any of these three flashbacks?

These two you cannot. I don't know about the Atari ones but I doubt it.

Yeah probably not. Using a Genesis controller with an actual Atari 2600 is boss though. The only way I roll these days.

I use a Sega Genesis controller to play the Atari 7800 version of Galaga. That's why I thought to ask.

Yeah, nostalgia be damned. It's just so much less painful.

Speaking I just got a boatload of new 2600 games because a local game store is closing and he's getting rid of them for next to nothing.

One of them is Astroblast which is essentially the 2600 version of Intellivision's Astrosmash.

I think I like Astroblast a bit better, probably because it's a little more intense early on and because I love the use of the paddle controllers.

Astroblast was one of the few games that let you use either the joystick *or* paddles. That's cool. Plus, it was a good version of the Intellivision game.
