Considering the circumstances, I always understood why that law was in place, but I never did like that portion of the Civil Rights Act. I always thought it was silly and sent the wrong message.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Not anymore!Ack wrote:That said, I thought the Civil Rights Act required any of these sorts of changes in Southern States be subjected to federal oversight before they are cleared.

Someone who's issued rulings in favor of late-term abortion and has offered opinions that are pro-legalization of LSD, pro-gay marriage, and suggests we should create a market for the buying of humans (I believe we call this slavery) as opposed to trying to disrupt human smuggling markets --- is not what we'd classify as a conservative. Libertarian is pushing it too. I'll accept liberal libertarian...which is exactly the type of person i'd expect to suggest an ID isn't necessary to vote.

Also, an ID isn't necessary to vote. I have cast multiple ballots without one.

This is a misinterpetation of a law review article that Judge Posner co-authored before Ronald Reagan appointed him to the federal bench.dsheinem wrote:wutmjmjr25 wrote:suggests we should create a market for the buying of humans
Judge Posner is not one to jettison his free-market, libertarian beliefs so that that they align with the Republican party's platform on social issues. Accordingly, he often takes a lot of heat for not being a "true" conservative.
EDIT: Here is a discussion of the article on The Libertarian Standard.

"Full time" is kind of an incorrect term, as it means different things to different companies. Especially since everybody wants to bring this back to racism and the like, looking at many southern states, there's a lot of "full time" jobs that don't have 9-5 hours. Mine work, a big thing in Appalachia, tends to have longer hours and a full night shift, since daylight isn't a factor. Factory jobs can really differentiate in their hours too, along with skilled labor like machining and such. (My Dad was a "full time" machinist for many years, and worked the night shift, 10pm-6am.)mjmjr25 wrote: You would suggest that the working poor work...the perfect schedule...full-time? Mon-Fri 9a-5p? Seriously. Read what you wrote and tell me you aren't seriously suggesting that. Isn't the normal line that the working poor have to work the jobs and hours the more fortunate won't work? ie, overnights, off shift, weekends and holidays.
On the discussion of whether or not the judge is libertarian- I haven't heard anything yet that makes him not libertarian. The libertarian party or idealism is hard to describe because it can vary so much, but tends to be economically conservative, (not sure if that's the right term, I mean to say they lean more towards capitalism) but socially liberal. Legalization of drugs is a common theme in Libertarian groups. Abortion is very split within the party, and there is no "official" stance on it.
