with all the outrage over this have people forgotten the DSi? it had games that were only compatible with it via download and was only released 2 years after the DS Lite.

I don't know if I'm in the majority or the minority, but when I saw this announcement, my first thought was: "AWESOME!" ... and my second thought was, if the system has a faster CPU, what does that mean for the 50+ games already in my library? Does it have some sort of legacy mode that implements the old timings, or do all the old games get a boost? (Is that going to be a positive for games like say, Mario Kart? It would definitely be a positive for Lego City Undercover...) What about the new analogue nub, is it backwards compatible with games that used the circle pad attachment? Kid Icarus for example? Now that it takes microSD, does that mean SDXC support? Can I pop a 128gb microSD in there? :D I have bought way more stuff on the eShop than I ever thought I would...

I love all the changes, though I wish that the XL model had the interchangeable face plates too. Some of them look pretty swank, and being able to change colours without changing to a different model would be nice. When I find out more information that answers some of my questions, I'll most likely be finding somewhere to trade my existing XL in towards this.

The 3DS is easily my favourite system this "generation", and I'm really excited by the refresh. I think it will keep the 3DS relevant for a longer period, and that's a huge positive -- it's a great system.

It shouldn't mean anything, so long as it's the same CPU only with a faster clock. It's like if you have a 2 GHz CPU in your PC then swap it out for a 2.5 Ghz CPU.

I would assume yes. There's always the possibility for update/patches to add compatibility to games.
irixith wrote:Now that it takes microSD, does that mean SDXC support? Can I pop a 128gb microSD in there?
All I've read is microSD, but no specification on HC or XC. I would assume if it supported XC that it would be one of the high points, so I'm guessing SDHC as usual. I'm not even sure why they pointed out microSD like it's a good thing. Those small cards are a pain in the ass to deal with compared to regular old SD. The switch to microSD was probably only a fitment thing.

But what are you gonna do with all your digital purchases on your existing XL?

Not to mention you can use a microSD card anyway with an adapter :P

Fast-forward a few years and Nintendo releases a trailer with a little analog nub and people are eating it up like it's manna from heaven.

People are crazy.
They should have added a second stick with the XL but noooo that not how nintendo works.
Yeah, I said the same thing. I also remember Nintendo making up some dumb reason why they couldn't add it when we all knew it would happen eventually.

System transfer!

I get where you're going though...the day that I traded my small 3DS to the big 3DS, I simply did the system transfer right at the store counter. Quick and painless. :)

That's news to me, I didn't even know such a system transfer existed until just now. That being the case, I'm in the maybe boat.

The only things I really care about is the better screen and better volume control placement.

As I've said in the 3DS thread, I hate the volume slider on the 3DS (and other DS consoles that use the same slider and location). I find it extremely difficult to make minute adjustments, which is key when using headphones. I also hate the placement of it, I'm always accidentally moving it. I like the 3DS a lot, and honestly, I would consider upgrading for this alone. The new volume slider and location looks great!

I haven't read any details about the new screen, I've only seen a picture with Japanese text. It looks like it's illustrating better viewing angles, I would assume with the 3D effect. Again, I said in the other thread, I end up keeping 3D off most of the time. I can't keep my hands still enough, and the image bounces/flickers if you move it slightly. If they improved this problem enough, along with the volume slider, that would get me to upgrade. I'd like to be able to use the 3D more, I just currently can't.

The other upgrades are nice, but I ultimately don't care. Longer battery life is great, but the battery in my 3DS XL last long enough for me (longer than I need it to). Did I read that the screens are slightly larger? The XL screen is large enough for me, I don't absolutely needing a slightly larger screen. If the faster CPU means eShop and Miiverse (these are the two that were cited) load faster, that's cool, but not something I really care about. If EVERYTHING overall loads faster, then that's something to consider. The extra buttons are great if that means they can port more games, but I prefer consoles over handhelds, so, yeah. Not something I really care about. I guess it's a wait and see situation, I'd only care about the faster CPU and extra buttons if there's a "New 3DS" exclusive that's a must-buy for me personally. Otherwise, the upgrades are kinda superficial to me.

This makes me sound like a sheep but I don't really care. My main gripe with this is that I gotta drop another $350-$400 now. I mean it doesn't have to be at launch of course (I'm still missing a revision or two from pre-3DS times), but it's more to purchase for the collection.

I'm curious what other 3.5DS games are gonna come out, but other than that, that's my two cents.
