Considering that hardcore does not mean "dedicated" but "rough, tough, harsh" (lit. hardened to the very center with an extended definition for pornography which dates to the 70s), I have no clue how anyone can think it can refer to video games. The better usage for video game players are:
casual players, enthusiasts/hobbyists, professionals
Casual players are those who pick up a game to play every once in a while. Enthusiasts and/or hobbyists are those who play extensively/those who make it a hobby to play. Professionals get money.
If you want hardcore games, you're wanting pornographic games. Oddly enough, you can casually play them. No dedication required.

Yeah, that works really well in the real world. I guess my moderate coin collection puts me on the same level as professionals, right? The kid who tosses the football around on weekends the same level as Kobe Bryant. My professional capacity in the university the same level as someone who reads history books?ZeroAX wrote:o.pwuaioc wrote:The better usage for video game players are:

I actually defined "hardcore" in one thread as gamers who play games demanding a high level of skill, and yet I used the word differently in this very thread. I guess it can mean different things in different context. Probably not worth arguing over
This reminds me of all the anger regarding the dictionary recently altering the definition of literally and the backlash that caused. Yet some people have pointed out that there is historical evidence for its usage as an exaggerated expression, which seems to support the decision to include that as a valid dictionary definition

Most of the time I consider the use of the word wrong, meaning I can't consider the people others call hardcore hardcore, cause I always know a group of gamers much more "hardcore" than the other.I actually defined "hardcore" in one thread as gamers who play games demanding a high level of skill, and yet I used the word differently in this very thread. I guess it can mean different things in different context. Probably not worth arguing over
So even though I too have tried to define it, I think it's too an abstract term for us to bother defining it.
Now if only we had a sense of humor too.

We can argue about the meaning of "hardcore" all day, but I think we all recognize a good "softcore" 3DO game when we see it...

Re: This gen. is over . Do you hold highly any console?
Not sure why this turned into a huge hardcore definition. I thought everyone agreed that hardcore meant anti-casual(usually kiddy/family friendly games) . I do not even believe that categorization existed pre-Wii . I think it was first used when people wanted "hardcore" games on the Wii not Mario Party 9 and Michael Jackson The Experience. Otherwise, games were always defined difficulty as "Difficult , Normal, and Easy" . Except for Doom...
