Talk more about cowboy games! Red Dead Revolver, Red Dead Redemption, the Call of Juarez series, Sunset Riders, Wild Arms, Gun, Tin Star, Outlaws, Darkwatch, Gun Fight, Alone in the Dark 3, Cowboy Kid, Custer's Revenge, The Lone Ranger, Samurai Western, Mad Dog McCree! Why is this era of American history that garnered massive attention during the first fifty years of American popular cinema so largely neglected by an industry that would seem to enjoy its pioneering aspects, the action and adventure, the tales of ferocious gunplay, self-reliance, and American mythology?
You didn't list Wild Guns, probably the best Cowboy game ever. Unless that was already discussed on podcast? I'm a bit behind

I don't think the whole Western thing is that popular these days in any region, but it was never the most popular genre over here anyhow. Perhaps the Western just isn't considered that interesting to most non-American cultures?

Haha, I was about to at the end, but figured I had listed plenty! But I'd say the Western has been quite popular in other countries. Italy practically redefined the genre in the 1960s, Mexico and Australia both have their own takes, and Japan has both influenced and been influenced by the Western. At its core, the Western is about individuals confronting a frontier, be it actual land, a personal one, an area of lawlessness, etc. Just because it's typically based on a period of US history doesn't mean the rest of the world won't take notice and find something to enjoy.

I think we'll just talk about Western RPGs and leave it at that
Actually, speaking of Western-themed RPGs... and Western JRPGs in particular, be sure to check out the last episode's interview with the guys doing Boot Hill Heroes...

I think that interview is what initiated the questions.

Do you ever feel that you need to force yourself to actually sit down and play games? I've noticed that while I thoroughly enjoy myself when I'm actually playing games, sometimes the act of setting aside time, shutting out distractions, choosing a game, and actually getting started feels almost like a chore.

Have you guys ever discussed how certain developers place emphasis on multiplayer online gameplay over actual substance with newer releases?
