What should developers NOT continue doing after this gen?
Re: What should developers NOT continue doing after this gen?
I think it's humorous that this thread is twice as long as the one about what game devs should continue doing.

Human nature. It's easier to nitpick.Ack wrote:I think it's humorous that this thread is twice as long as the one about what game devs should continue doing.

That, and this generation has seemed pretty bleak in general. The cost of producing an "A list" game has gotten to be too much, so we end up with fewer A list games. And if those few don't offer much that we like? Well now we're left to be more critical of the A list games we've got instead of being able to forget about it and move on to others that suit our personal tastes better.BurningDoom wrote:Human nature. They should stop being bland.
And they won't, because it's the inevitable fate of every industry.
Look at movies or books. They aren't good or bad, they are FUCKING BLAND, GENERIC EVERYDAY STUFF. There's nothing special about most art, you will forget it ten minutes after you use it.
With increasing budgets and a never-ending inflow of undemanding new players this is inevitable. Attemps to maximize the potential market need to completely remove anything that makes a game interesting or special, because if it has something new or quirky, some people won't buy it and that's unnaceptable.

That's my number 1 concern, I hate that online crap. Also, stop using polygons, I like Pixels and Hand-Drawn things.DinnerX wrote:I suppose the developer doesn't have much say over those things.AppleQueso wrote:This is all publisher stuff that's out of the developer's hands.DinnerX wrote:Using DRM
Region locking
Being afraid to make big budget 2D games
Avoiding certain less popular genres
I remembered something else that is disturbing. The focus on online matches instead of single player.
