Yeah I went to 20 gas stations to either find 50+ deep lines or just closed/sold out (not closed on Sundays ones either). I found one that only had 20 cars deep and not sold out. Price gouging has begun too: 188+ per liter.hashiriya1 wrote:Yeah, my friend said her local groceries are emptying out...and she lives in Yokohama! She also said she had to wait a long time just to get gas.
Yeah I made sure to get a bunch of rice, noodles, and other stuff that'll last a long time. Plus we've filled up a bunch of water bottles just in case too.Breetai wrote:Damn..........D.D.D. wrote:It's already started in Kanto now... Food shortage and & gas (plus kerosene) shortages and the scares of shortages have already started spreading. I just stocked up on food & gas but who knows what the next few weeks will be like.
Americans and Canadians tend to stock up on food quite a bit, with are large freezers and storages of non-perishables. In Japan, I know people often buy as they need things and don't often have more than a few days/week's supply of food in their home. I'm thinking that those who stockpile a month's worth of food or more have it right. I really do worry about how things will go for those without extra food.
If things get crazy enough, I'll drive over to Kansai and stay with a friend for a while... But if things get really bad, like fall-out crazy, time to GTFO of Japan.

Check this out, because the Fukushima nuke plant is all f'd up and the greater Tokyo area uses a f-ton of electricity, they are asking everyone to be ultra-conservative on electricity and they're going to start doing rolling black-outs.

Time to break the Gameboy and a stockpile of batteries out!D.D.D. wrote:Check this out, because the Fukushima nuke plant is all f'd up and the greater Tokyo area uses a f-ton of electricity, they are asking everyone to be ultra-conservative on electricity and they're going to start doing rolling black-outs.
Not sure how well that Gameboy would work by candlelight though...

That's probably due to a lack of confirmation, than a lack of deaths. One police chief was quoted as expecting 10,000 dead in Miyagi alone. We're talking about entire neighborhoods just swept away. Honestly, this makes Katrina or 9/11 pale in comparison, as did the Hatian earthquake last year or the Indonesian tsunami in 2004.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:otherwise it seems that casualties are low with the current reported numbers sitting at 44 since about the time I woke up an hour ago.

Re: Japan 8.9M Quake/Tsunami
I wrote that the morning of the quake at about 7AM so it was around the time when nobody really had much information on what had gone down. The numbers have steadily balooned and seem to have leveled off a bit which is good. The footage and news that's been coming in since Friday morning is pretty intense stuff and I'm glad that the casualties have been stayed respectively low for an event like this in such a densely populated country. Compared to the '05 tsunami Japan's warning system and preparedness really paid off.Hatta wrote:That's probably due to a lack of confirmation, than a lack of deaths. Also I'd make an Evangelion comparison, but that really wouldn't work right now given the real life circumstances.

The evangelion comparison you were going to make might be inappropriate, sure, but I imagine it helps illustrate just how incredibly unreal the whole situation seems.
It's just so hard to imagine something like this actually happening.

I'd have to agree. When I first heard about this and the videos, images, etc, started to pour in... it was just utterly surreal. It was really hard to take in. Sad stuff for sure, my condolences to everyone out there right now.AppleQueso wrote:The evangelion comparison you were going to make might be inappropriate, sure, but I imagine it helps illustrate just how incredibly unreal the whole situation seems.

Re: Japan 8.9M Quake/Tsunami
Two more people checked in this morning. They couldn't talk very long due to rolling coverage and they are trying to preserve their cellphone batteries since they have no power. They are using their cars to charge their phones, but gas is at a premium now.
Here are the people in the affected area I am trying to contact now:
Yoshinari Anezaki 姉崎義徳, 44 (Natori)
Yukihiro Matsufuji 松藤幸広, 28 (Natori)
Hiroshi Izumi 泉洋, 32 (Sendai)
Megumi Sasaki 佐々木恵, 29 (Tagajo)
Hiroki Sasaki 佐々木洋樹, 27 (Sendai)
I keep checking the sites (including google's) which you can publish or search names of people who've been found, dead or alive. If you know of any more sites which do this, try to search for their names. EVeryone else I know from the affected area were either not in Sendai at the time, or were far from the heavy-hit areas. Just the 2 who have checked in plus the names on that list are the people who might have been in the biggest danger.

Damn... That just sucks. So many thinks suck there now. I'm almost going to cry, despite saying I couldn't earlier...D.D.D. wrote:Check this out, because the Fukushima nuke plant is all f'd up and the greater Tokyo area uses a f-ton of electricity, they are asking everyone to be ultra-conservative on electricity and they're going to start doing rolling black-outs.
Maybe it's good I'm not in Japan right now with my wife and kid.
What were gas prices at before? 150yen/L, give or take?
