I've been wanting to post on this topic for some time now, but I can't because of time restrictions (in the middle of exams right now) .
So anyway until my exams are over here's some food for thought.
http://kotaku.com/5469858/rumor-activis ... n-luxoflux
activision the most successful publisher in the industry just fired tons of people from successful studios who have made the company tons of money with their games over the years. studios like neversoft (the good tony hawk games, guitar hero) luxoflux (plenty of licensed games like transformers and kung fu panda) and the guys who made prototype (another big seller).
so the guys make the company a lot of money and activision still decides to close the studio down.
just as I've said I don't disagree that piracy is illegal, but I think that saying piracy closes studios is a valid argument, when most of the studios that close down, are either unsuccessful regardless of piracy, or in this case (and many other cases (ensemble springs to mind)) the executives just want to get a fatter bonus.
so don't put all the blame on pirates, for the closure of gaming studios. they are being treated like garbage from the publishers anyway.
Does the hunt on piracy piss off anyone else here?

I don't think anyone is implying that piracy is the sole reason that publishers and developers lay people off, but you can't deny (as you indicated) it's a significant part of the equation. Crappy games are crappy games, and studios that continue to push out games that don't sell have to face the consequences.ZeroAX wrote:I've been wanting to post on this topic for some time now, but I can't because of time restrictions (in the middle of exams right now) .

It's also important to realize that layoffs aren't always because a company is not making money. There are many other reasons for layoffs in any industry.
The bottom line is this: Piracy lowers the revenue for all companies in the industry. Even if it is only one lost sale, it's still lower revenue. Could all of the jobs be saved? No way, but some of them could have.

Re: Does the hunt on piracy piss off anyone else here?
The only thing i have pirated is movies, music imo is an art and i'm a part time musican and it's like stealing intellectual property from something that they created. I don't pirate games because i'm a collector and fake games are retarded I don't even pirate roms or dreamcast games. But movie stars are fake arrogant over paid assholes, not only are movies over priced but now they advertise before you even watch the movies.

Walmart is a big evil company so it is okay to steal from them.
Gamefly is a big company that wont get hurt if I steal from them since they buy so many copies of each game.
Gamestop is a evil nich company so it is okay to steal from them.
Blockbuster is closing down they wont miss the profits from what I steal so it is okay to steal from them.
Alpinex2 thinks its okay to steal movies and music since they are arrogant fake people, so it must be okay for me to steal from him.

Oh no no! He only thinks that stealing movies is okay because unlike musicians actors/directos are overpaid (And thus that justifies you getting something for free), they don't do art (Unlike musicians) and of coruse they are all arrogant and fake people, unlike musicians (And that totally justifies you when it comes to breaking their rights).kgcarini wrote:Alpinex2 thinks its okay to steal movies and music

We should start a campaign against Corporations going to extremes to stop piracy.
"I just finished raping and killing 35 people. I am going to jail for downloading Rick Astley's hit song "Never gonna Give you up"
Then the screen changes to white lettering. it says
"Dear Companies, as pirates, we are never going to give you up, but you see we will also never let you down. We also solemnly swear that we are never going to run around and hurt you.

Haha, it's not really an argument. I'm just saying that I believe if it's not physical property that's being stolen, it shouldn't be illegal.deathclaw wrote:What a great argument, now you convinced me.darthmunky wrote:Nothing should be illegal to download. Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.
Re: Does the hunt on piracy piss off anyone else here?
That's exactly my point. If I had the choice to download a car I probably would. If I could download anything non-digital I would. I can't wait to see what a field day they have when 3D printers are commercialised.lost_within wrote:Niode wrote:

What the image is in reference to, is a BBFC propaganda video that is played at the beginning of many commercial DVDs. It actually says "you wouldn't steal a car" but the key difference is stealing and piracy isn't the same thing. Hence the "you wouldn't download a car".
Best anti-piracy video ever:
