I hope that the Playstation does not go the way off the saturn. If Sony would abandon it's hardware it would kill their name in the video game hardware business. Sony has to realize every hardware manufacture has been in last place at one point or another and trying to find a way to defeat the other hardware manufactures. Hell Nintendo got their ass's kicked last generation by Sony and know Nintendo is a juggernaut in the hardware market. The hardware industry is a brutal market that a lot of big companies have tried and failed to survive. Sony is not immune to defeat and no other company is either.

LittleBigPlanet, MGS4, Valkyria Chronicles, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Wipeout HD, EchoChrome...there's 8 future gaming classics right there, not including GoWIII and another dozen shared titles.

I see what the point of the post is regarding the Saturn, but I'd just like to point out that there is a growing, fantastic library of titles on the PS3 - and I'm not being a fanboy as I have all three current gen systems and have used my PS3 the most.

High price and overdone complexity always seem work against a console and the PS3 is a good example.

I called this on Benheck way before the PS3 even launched. Back then a lot of PS2 people got mad and shut me down, but as time goes on this general idea of the PS3 has changed from wishful thinking to speculation, to consideration, and now is approaching on accepted fact. The PS3 is on its way to destruction, it has no chance to survive, make your time, ha ha ha.

I am not sure how this can be true.
According to vg chartz, ps3 up until now(mid life cycle?) sold almost 20 million units, while gamecube 21 million(whole cycle) and 24 million for xbox original. while ps2 sold like 100+ million. Yet look at this generation, the margin difference is sure a lot smaller, not to consider extra income this generation from stuff like psn.

I don't think ps3 is that difficult to develop for(on opposite of saturn that still has no adequate emulator!!) , its just more difficult than 360 and wii.

Most upsetting thing about ps3 is that it over promised and really really under delivered, I mean 360 was released a whole year earlier with no blu-ray and some crazy super chip inside, it puts out games equal and I think better than ps3's . Just consider gears of war and halo specially with their online play. I am not sure if the architecture is there, but if it is, then its like buying an 8 cylinder car with only 6 capable of being used...whats the use of buying it?

Plus what excuse does ps3 has to raise the price over 360 when the 360 does the same thing or better?

I don't think sony failed or will fail, I just think they are not having as much crazy success as they did. On the opposite of the saturn that had retarded hardware (difficult to develop for and not as capable-not made for 3d in mind) , the ps3 is more than capable but its not being used. Plus saturn put sega almost out of business ...I don't see how ps3 can do that specially when you consider that it is already a success.

I think for next generation ps4 should be like the home entertainment system specially that sony can use leverage it with their huge departments in music and movie business. It can be like your tivo, console, dvd/bluray player, and internet access machine for video conferencing . I also think it should look more like a tvio/dvd player than a console, you know just sleek simple design. I am sure nintendo and microsoft heading that way too

The best looking games on the PS3 & 360 aren't really comparable, so while many multi-platform games will look equal, the exclusives really show the power of each system. Look at Motorstorm 2, it's really the best looking racer this generation, so much action on screen at once, very vivid colour pallete and a great sense of speed - it's graphics and gameplay are so different from any of the 360 exclusive racers that it's not really comparable to somthing like Forza 2, despite looking better for the most part. As for Halo 3 & Gears of War's online play, you can totally get the same kind of experience playing Resistance 2 online, with online 4-player splitscreen across all modes, competetive match-making, co-operative matchmaking, party support etc.

With each new exclusive released, the consoles diverge further away from each other in terms of what they can pull off - Killzone 2 is nearly out and looks spectacular, Uncharted 2 is looking amazing and is already a huge step-up from the still great looking original, Heavy Rain is simply jaw-dropping, but there's nothing really comparable on the 360, although thats not to say the 360 doesn't have any great looking exclusives on the horizon, it really does - it's just a question of which console is maxed out first.

More reliable hardware? The fact that the PS3's an absolutely amazing media center? Online play without the need for a paid subscription? Built in wireless? Easily (and cheaply) upgradable hard-drive? All those factors convinced me that the extra cost of the PS3 was/is worth it.

Saturn was far, far less successful.

Give the PS3 some credit.

I ascribe some of that to the fact that unlike Sega, Sony didn't piss all over its brand image in the previous generation. The Sega CD and 32x had some decent stuff but on the whole all they did was erode consumer confidence in the Sega brand. On the other hand, Sony was the top selling console last generation. So they still have a decent amount of consumer confidence.

Agree. While there are a lot of similarities and while I might even agree that "PS3 = new Saturn" on a basic level, not every generation is exactly like past ones. It's never apples to apples. The PS3 IS successful, just not as successful as the competition. The GC, Xbox and TurboGrafx by and large were not failures despite last place numbers (unlike other hardware like the Jaguar or 3DO). Sony has deep pockets, despite its recent losses, and will continue to push through. I don't believe it will pull the plug and go for a new console anytime soon. It will continue to find a way to make the PS3 platform work.

Also agree with Bootaaay. Killzone, Uncharted 2 and especially Heavy Rain will begin to show the horsepower under the hood. There are still MILLIONS of PS2 owners who haven't upgraded to the 360 or the PS3 and as the price goes down they'll jump in. The real worry for Sony is people who think they've upgraded by getting a Wii and therefore don't have the money/desire to get a PS3.

I thought the last released figure was 16.84million sold?
