I got Rock Band for my birthday this past April. I was playing on medium for about a couple of weeks. I play expert now. I can past about everything, minus the impossible category stuff. Here are some of my favorite songs from RB/RB2:

"Reptilia" - The Strokes (Very fun. Love the Chorus)
"Cherub Rock" - The Smashing Pumpkins (This would have to be the song that got me back into them)
"Everlong" - Foo Fighters (Hard, but the song makes this hand cramping song awesome!)
"(Don't) Fear the Reaper" - Blue Öyster Cult (This song is awesome, but it needs more cow bell)
"Let there Be Rock" - AC/DC (I thought it be hard when I heard it, but its fun! Very good Solos!)
"Go With the Flow" - Queens of the Stone Age (Short and Sweet. What RB songs should be)

Some of my favorite DLC songs:
"Siva" - The Smashing Pumpkins (This song has the most weirdest riff in the whole series)
"Interstate Love Song" - Stone Temple Pilots (Very fun song. One of my favorite songs of all time)
"...And Justice For All" - Metallica (GH:M eat your heart out! Great song. Hard solo. 9 1/2 min. length!)
"Ex-Girlfriend" - No Doubt (I was so happy when No Doubt came to RB. Great song. Retarded solo)
"Hysteria" - Muse (The hardest bass DLC. But at the same time, its all fun, until the hand cramps comes)
"More Than a Feeling" - Boston (Its just fun!)

I also can't wait for Ten to come out.

So does anyone with RB2 have the cymbal expansion packs? I've got the three cymbals (and a fourth that I need to mod at some point so I have double blue) and I gotta say they are fun as hell. They're very loud, but I was able to mute them using the foam insulation that's used for leaky windowsills and whatnot. There's a few songs I won't even attempt to use them in (basically anything by The Who) but for the most part I can figure out when to use them vs. when I should be hitting the toms. And it really gets you into the experience more.

So how do they work? Where do they plug in. Do they work with the RB1 kit (they haven't bothered to release the new kit, or any other RB2 instruments for that matter, in this country... You can barely get the game. For some reason I think game shops are suppressing it to force people into buying the more expensive GH:WT. Which is just plain shitty. The only place that I've seen have it is Asda... No proper game shops have it or just deny it's existence :x )

From what I've heard, there are some jacks on the back of the back of the RB2 kit. The cymbals act the same as their color pad counterpart expect they make a cymbal sound in the song. These cymbals only work for the RB2 kits. I provably won't get some because I'm a guitar player. Plus, they don't really give any enhancements to the game play (i.e. more notes; GHWT)

I'm also sorry to hear about your RB2 predicament. Its sad to hear that HMX (or EA?) is giving the shit end of the stick to you overseas folks. I don't even think Australia's is ever going to get Rock Band at all. But if you own a PS3 then you can easily import a copy of it from the US.

Yup, as said, the RB2 kit has three stereo jacks that the cymbals plug in to, and give you an extra option for each color. The game does differentiate, as even without the cymbals the fills use all four pads as drums, instead of the RB1 style of three drums and a crash. You add the cymbals and you can have more varied fills. If you're just going for completion it doesn't really add anything. But I feel it just adds so much to the experience. It's hard to express.
