Any titles to avoid in the Tales series?
Re: Any titles to avoid in the Tales series?
Your opinions are noted, Mozgus. But frankly, I did already buy the game and I'm unlikely to make it through a console RPG emulated on PC these days. What makes it such a bad port, anyway? I'd like to know what's different, what's sub-par.

I thought it was fine, it's also the only way to actually own a copy of the game and play it in english. I suppose the button condensing (snes had more buttons than the gba) was less then desirable, but all things considered, it certainly wasn't terrible.

Only honest review I could find:

It covers a lot of gripes I had. Note that he was actually exposed to Symphonia first, but still liked this start to the series more. Major sanity pointed awarded for that.

Re: Any titles to avoid in the Tales series?
This review you noted actually seems to vacillate on its opinion of the game. But overall it looks like it's still an OK RPG. That review does point out many of the pitfalls, and some of them are annoying. I might not have bought the game knowing this. Still, I have it, and I don't see anything that should make me unable to play it. I'll report back later with my impressions.

Agreed that GBA phantasia + PS2 Legendia are terrible.
If you have a modded PSP/PSX, get the PSX remake of Tales of Phantasia + English Patch.

Not having played any of the other Tales titles, including other versions of Phantasia, so far I'm giving the GBA ToP a thumbs up. It isn't the best RPG I've played on the GBA, but it's more fun than FFIV and Lunar by quite a bit (and the combat system is actually kinda fun, frankly). It's no Tactics Ogre or Golden Sun, but it ain't bad.
Re: Any titles to avoid in the Tales series?
I really enjoyed Tales of the Abyss. It's got an incredibally complex world and a great story. The main characters dialog is quite annoying at first, but the funny thing is that everyone else in the game thinks so too and ridicules him about it. The story is pretty solid too. Great weapons system, and abilites/spell system. I really liked the battles too. It's bassically an rpg with complex brawler/beat 'em 3d battles. And they are fun, not a grinding chore. You can see you enemies like Chrono Cross and avoid them if you don't feel like fighting. Tons of valuable sidequests and some great cutscenes (some cheesy ones too). Overall, its one of the best RPG's i've played and my favorite on PS2.

Thanks for the tips on the series. Seem to be plenty of varied opinions. Will most likely start with Symphonia on GC. The older titles look cool, but hard to get.

Ugh, jesus. Just promise you'll move onto the better ones, instead of just losing interest in the whole thing thanks to Symphonia.blaix wrote:Thanks for the tips on the series.
