They can be fun/interesting to shoot for. I don't see it as any different than an RPG side quest or something like the Mission Mode in Soul Calibur. But no, I don't obsess over them or worry about the size of my e-peen/gamerscore.

Achievements are nothing like those things. RPG side-quests gives you in game-rewards and more story. Soul Calibur's Mission Modes unlock weapons and other stuff.

Achievements do absolutely nothing. At least in Team Fortress 2 they unlock new class weapons...

I might get this one for PS3 and see how the USB Saturn pads work on it (and start earning trophies alongside my achievements).

The point is, they're extra. And you can do them. If you want. Or not. It doesn't matter.
