Popular 80's music usually did suck. But I must admit that I do miss the sense of melody that most of those 80's one-hit wonders had. Pop music is so pasteurized and generic these days. I guess we can thank Pro Tools for that. With software like that, ANYONE can make a song - albeit a digitized, artificial-sounding one. (Still, it definitely beats cutting old tape reels back in the analog days if you wanted to loop anything, in spite of how much better sounding analog is.)

Last I checked you don't "switch on" software. And while it is definitely a complicated and advanced piece of software, it it something the average musician can learn well enough to mix their own stuff. Just like all those cottage Photoshoppers. They may not be very good, but the tool is so good it makes up for them.

They may not be very good, but the tool is so good it makes up for them.

I use Pro Tools every working day. The software isn't as straight forward to use as people think. People have this opinion that Pro Tools makes everybody sound like Britney Spears. This opinion is not only damaging to this industry but also a waste of my time. There has been plenty of times when people with no talent whatsoever get this deluded opinion that they can walk into a studio and walk out with a hit single, because "you use that pro tools right? that means it'll make me sound great". Um no.

Making records is a lot harder than people think. You can't just walk into a studio and expect to sound like guns n roses or britney spears or whatever. The people who are producing those bands are extremely talented guys and for the most part are completely unknown. They get hidden behind the "Pro Tools did all the work" opinion.

People with talent walk into a pro tools studio, I make them sound better. Not because of Pro Tools. I could make anyone sound better with just an 8 track and a few tape to tape reels.

I'm sorry for soloing you out for saying the pro tolls bullshit. I just hate people who think that Pro Tools does the work. It makes it easier, just like most things in life, it is a tool to achieve the same outcomes in less time. Without an engineer who knows what he is doing you can't make a decent record. You cannot sit somebody in front of Pro Tools and expect them to be able to make a single. Recording is an art. It takes a long time to develop your chops. It's like playing an instrument.

Amen. I don't use Pro Tools in any of my music productions, but when people hear my stuff I usually get asked how long I've been working with Pro Tools.

When I tell them I don't use it, it boggles their minds; its so funny.

To stay on topic though, I like the old GNR because it reminds me of being a little kid again and it least some of the songs are still pretty good; Chinese Democracy is just not for me.

Even my lil bro who is a hardcore GNR fan, doesn't like Chinese Democracy.

I can not however say the same for Motley Crue. I picked up a greatest hits CD and could barely listen to it; those songs have not aged well.

Dr. Feelgood still rocks though.

I didn't mean to imply that any Joe Regular could simply sit with Pro Tools and make a decent-sounding record. I know it takes more than that. My comments were directed towards the Britney Spears-types who can simply mutter the word "womanizer" and make a song out of it. There is someone behind it, but you can rest assured that it's usually not the person singing (oftentimes even playing) the song that's doing all the recording work.

I understand and respect the knowledge it takes to make a good recording.

Except for the very first line I quoted, I agree. Nothing I wrote necessarily contradicts that. Pro Tools cannot compensate for a lack of talent (which doesn't at all explain why so much sucky pop music gets produced these days, but that's another whole beast). You can polish a turd, but then you just have a polished turd. I'd argue the same thing about Photoshop, to a point. Both are tools that allow mediocre people to put a little extra sheen on mediocre content, or creative masters to more easily tease out the quality within already good works. Did Photoshop make fine photographers or artists any less valuable? Not at all. It just gave the world of visual arts more tools to ply.
