Re: Thinking of Picking Up a Used XBox
Since you like to save money, may I recommend going to Craigslist. Just have a lot of patience and you will get a really good deal. You get a better deal than Gamestop and you don't have to support that evil corporation.

Craigslist (or any classifieds) feels creepy to me. I don't want to meet up with people to buy used stuff unless it's somebody I know.

It is worth it, the first Buffy game was one of my favorites, I am a huge Weadon fan, so it gets my approval, much better then Chaos Bleeds.
of course Shenmue 2 & Panzar Dragoon Orta are must plays as well, and for rpgs Knights of the Old Republic is the gold standard of the generation.

Totally worth it, especially if you mod it. I used the dvd drive in a friends system to backup all my games (my dvds dead, I chipped it to get it usable again) and I haven't had a reason to use the dvd drive in over a year. Things load faster, and there's less noise. Plus it makes a killer media center for really cheap, put a big hard drive in it and your good to go. I have a 250 gb in mine that has 100+ movies, 10+ seasons of tv shows, 60 some cd, 11 xbox games, and emus and games for atari 2600, pd engine, n64, nes, snes, gameboy, genesis, and playstation.
It works out great, my girlfriend loves not having to deal with dvds all the time, and I can play tons of games without getting up to switch disks ever. If I ever want to change things around I just ftp it of my computer. For the price it puts every other media center out there to shame.

How is the system's noise without using the DVD drive?
Would you compare it to the fan of the Dreamcast or is it more like the quiet Wii/Gamecube/Saturn?

I haven't had my dreamcast in awhile so I'm not certain exactly. Based of memory I'd say it's a little louder. But still only noticeable if the volume is really low. I've never messed with it but you can change the fan speed in xbmc, although I'm not certain if that applies to games or just the dashboard.
It's pretty easy to change the fan from what I understand, the stock one is surely the cheapest one they could get, with a nice pc fan I imagine it'd be on par with a Gamecube noise wise.
