Final Fantasy IX, in a good way. Final Fantasy X-2, in a bad way.

Kleeya from Star Trek: Elite Force II is a prime example of the more visceral type of fanservice. And basically nobody in the game seems to realize just how little she's wearing...

Mega Man 9 comes to mind right away. The 8-bit graphics, game play, box-art, and even down to the faux-nes cart the soundtrack came in are pretty much as fan-servicey as it can get I think.

Fighters Megamix was one of the last games released here in the US for the Saturn; it was a replacement for Virtua Fighter 3, which never came out on the Saturn due to lack of support from the American market and Bernie Stolar's braindead marketing. It featured the full rosters from both Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers with move rosters and more 3-dimensional gameplay, which was fan service enough. They took the fan service several steps further with the inclusion of Virtua Fighter Kids characters, Janet from Virtua Cop 2, Bark the Bear and Bean the Dynamite from Sonic the Fighters, Rent-A-Hero, and most awesome of all, the Hornet Car from Daytona USA (the car grabs onto its opponent with one wheel, and burns rubber with the other on one special attack).

Um, it wasn't. It came out in early '97, the last Saturn releases in the US were about mid '98. The game is very fan-servicey though. =)

Speaking of Saturn fan service, Magic Knight Rayearth. The game itself isn't really fan-service, but Working Designs brought it over even though they knew the Saturn was dead and they knew they wouldn't make a profit; yet they made it anyway for the sake of the fans. If that isn't the purest form of fan-service, I don't know what is.

Not listed are the hundreds of H titles Japan churns out every year.

Now that's service.

Great answer on both counts.

FF9 is nice example.

FF9 is actually one of my favorites in the series. It's kind of underrated (if a Final Fantasy game can actually be considered 'underrated'). I underestimated the game after being disappointed in FF8, and didn't even play it until a year ago.

Actually, it could be said that every Final Fantasy game is a fan-service game.

What really annoys me about FF X-2 is that it had some GREAT gameplay ideas, but there was so much embarrassing crap in that game's story and characters. Even calling it a guilty pleasure doesn't quite excuse what they did in that game
