I just picked up Neutopia, and it's a great little game. The dialog is kinda funny and it plays pretty decent. Not really Zelda caliber, but pretty good for it's time.

Has anyone played the Legend of Tomna? I played it on an emulator and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I actually just purchased Legend of Tonma about a week ago and look forward to giving it a go.

My two favorite games for the Turbo Grafx-16 are Bloody Wolf and Dead Moon. I can play both those games over and over again and they never lose their charm.

marurun wrote:I really liked Aero Blasters. Sure, Air Buster came out on the Genesis, but the TG has better music (for once) and much better control. You have to like shooters, though.

Dungeon Explorer was also lots of fun. Very cool game with weirdly atmospheric music.
I was torn on whether or not to include Aero Blasters on my top games list. It's very solid, but there are so many great shoot 'em ups for the TG-16, where do you draw the line? Good call on the music. I compared both the TG-16 and Genesis versions a while back, and the former's music was much better, especially for stage 2. Incredible, though, that the pseudo-16-bit TG-16 could hold its own against the truely 16-bit Genesis. Have you seen the Street Fighter 2 port for the PC-Engine?

Dungeon Explorer definitely made the cut. I actually grew up playing the sequel on my Turbo Duo. Such an awesome blend of Gauntlet and Action-Adventure gaming. I still remember seeing the cut-scenes for the first time and how impressed I was.

Neutopia is great. Sure, it's a shameless Zelda clone, but accurately immitating a great game still leaves you with, well, a great game. In the sequel you even get to move diagonally! The first Neutopia cracks me up because you can obtain the fire-shooting wand in the first two-minutes, whereas fighting Zelda's 6th dungeon wizards to obtain the wand is one of the hardest parts of the whole game. If you like this style gameplay, I recommend you try Valkyrie no Densetsu, too.

I really like Legend of Hero Tonma because it combines shooting and hop-and-bop platformer gameplay. The graphics are also quite beautiful, especially the rich colors for backgrounds (there's even a full review at my site). While it's often compared to Ghouls 'N Ghosts, the difficulty is thankfully, much more reasonable. I actually found breezing through the first three levels pretty easy.

Ack, never a day goes by when I don't long for schooling some upstart with my (largely bullshit) massive expertise in all things Turbo. Which leads me to another of my favorites, the original Legendary Axe. Sure, the graphics are kinda weird, but the music is all spooky, and the whole charging weapon thing encourages slow advancement and methodical platforming, which is kinda my style anyway. I always just died a lot at games like Sonic.

And even though there are many other shooters on the TG-16, Aero Blasters had a feel that was just a bit different from the other shooters. It wasn't YATGS (Yet Another TG Shooter). Also, the 2 PS mechanic rocked. Sometimes I'd play 2 player with only one controller, meaning I could do coordinated high-powered screen blasts more easily and get double the firepower.

Cadash?

Post by timewarpgamer »

I may be an upstart as a forum presence, but not in terms of TG-16 familiarity. Bring it on, marurun! Nevertheless, you've done schooled me on Aero Blasters. I must admit that I never tried it with a second player. I'll be sure to remedy that, even if it means taking a page from your book and piloting two ships at once.

Legendary Axe definitely stood out in an era that was overloaded with platformers. Good call. I really like the bright colors and distinctive music. But I thought the sequel was crap—your main character is practically naked, he wields a sword??? and the colors are so drab and serious.

Have you played the TG-16 version of Cadash? So much better than the Genesis one. And it has that more methodical platformer play.

Yeah, I played the hell out of Cadash. It and Parasol Stars were my first WD games and two of my favorites.

I miss my Turbo rig, with my genuine Kisado, my Arcade Card Pro, and my Dracula X. I don't regret trading it for a Saturn, but I do so miss it.
