Scenario 2 is pretty much playable. I did so myself last year. Scenario three is still pretty much a no go as of now but progress is being made. I highly recommend these games nonetheless. There is very little reading necessary to play the games and you can read the fan translated dialogue online in between battles.

I've always considered RPG and strategy games to be very poor for someone who doesn't speak Japanese (speaking as someone who doesn't understand Japanese). You end up having to consult a walkthrough to get the story, and it can lose some impact by being presented in that way, even if it is a translation guide. And let's be honest, one of the main reasons we play JRPGs is for the story.

Yeah, I could put the $50 towards something else. I also do like complete games, especially CD ones; solo carts don't bother me really.
I just know I wouldn't be playing it anytime soon and I just don't wanna fork over the $80 right now (even if it does come with the bonus CD and special box).

I think Shining Force lends itself much better to playing in Japanese because of the way it is structured.

You play through a battle for 1 hour or more that requires you to maybe consult an online translation for a couple lines. Then, in between battles there is a little story that you can easily follow along the online translation for. I believe they even have most of the menu's and items translated through Scen 3 too.

I'm biased, but this game is awesome and I really think you should play it.

Just want to share with you guys. I just bought all three games complete for 26 dollars plus 6 dollars shipping. Not trying to brag, but that's much better than 80 dollars someone was being offered to on here. Yay me!!! Now I need a strategy guide or translation. :P

Oh, I can definately confirm that the translated ISO of Scenario 2 is playable. I haven't gone through it yet (still working on Scenario 1), but it's the only game I've actually been able to get to work with the swap trick. Every other game comes up as "unsuitable" in the Saturn menu.
