Things to tell people who think retro games suck?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I agree with most of whats been said, but would add a few comments. The average person is content to watch whatever shows the stations put out, watch the biggest blockbuster films, listen to the music MTV tells them is good, and play the games that get promoted the most. The people who don't go out there and search for obscure games, music or movies are generally of the un-creative type who will not appreciate a game for it's style. They just want the best "graphics" (whatever that means to them). But if they actually sat down and played some classic games, they would probably enjoy them. So don't worry about them, us creative types who think freely are usually the ones that are more succesful and happy in life. Next time they give you crap you can just smile knowing they'll probably end up in some desk job they hate.

Same thing I tell people that say they don't play videogames... Its not that you don't like them, its that you haven't found one for you. I'm pretty good for picking out games for people, retro or not.

I usually don't have this problem I am 21 so most people I associate grew up with retro games and have no real reason to talk shit about them, those that do talk shit about them well they are no friends of mine and should jump in front of the next train.

When people talk about how unimportant things things from the past are, it reminds me of an old Bill Hicks joke

People say "Bill, quit talking about Kennedy man. It was a long time ago, just let it go, alright? It's a long time ago, just forget it." I'm like, alright, then don't bring up Jesus to me. As long as we're talking shelf life here...

Probably not a good analogy, but I always loved that joke

That'd be considered a compliment where I live...

On a more serious note, as aforementioned, if they aren't willing to be open-minded and see things for what they are, then there's no use reasoning with them. Just always keep in mind, it doesn't matter what anyone THINKS they know about you, it's what you know about you.

Just ask them, assuming they are genuinely interested in your reply and not just conceited plebs, 'if a game is good, what difference does it make?'

Anything they could attempt to argue in protest with is reason enough to end the discussion there. After that, the discussion is gone. Period.

I think the main problem here is your age. Don't get me wrong, it's good that you are getting into games that were released before you were even born etc. You can appreciate how far gaming technology has come and not take it for granted. However your friends likely never played any of these games growing up and were brought up on Playstations and that is all they know. It's not their fault, it's just how kids are usually brought up.

None of the older crowd that frequent this forum can say they weren't at fault of this. We were all brought up on the Sega/Nintendo wars. You either had a 'Sega' or a 'Nintendo' in your house, you spent most of your school days arguing which was better. Then when games advertising started going you were forced fed the genesis/mega drive does what nintendon't marketing bullshit and again, this was all you knew. We were all under the immature mindset that bigger/newer was better. It's just how our minds work.

The thing is you grow up and either want to explore more about your hobby, or you just go ahead blindly playing whatever game is popular at the time and enjoy it. There's nothing bad about this. If people are happy playing their Mario clones and their GTAs then that's fine. There's a whole lot of history as far as gaming is concerned and a plethora of avenues to go down in enjoying your passion (e.g., collecting, mastering, modding or simply discussing them) that can be said of any other hobby really. Some people choose the path of the righteous (I.E., the retro-gamers :P) or the sheep (everybody else who continues to play the latest popular titles until they are out of fashion).

I say enjoy your games regardless of age. If your friends can't accept you for that, then they're not really your friends.

Usually I steer clear of people who want the newest console, with the best graphics or hardware. They buy these as conversation starters and to prove that they are better than other people. A person like yourself that can see quality games at your age has my respect, because when I was your age I spent, passing periods defending the dreamcast and sega.
P.S. It only takes ten seconds to load up sonic on the genny. It takes how long on the ps3 to install and play Metal Gear Solid 4?
I will create a monument to non-existence.
