Aliens Vs. Predator, the arcade game. And yes, stick with the arcade, as the console versions limit you a bit. Also, the Double Dragon games were fun, and there's always the console crossover Battletoads & Double Dragon.
Yes. I love the trio of AvP, The Punisher, and Captain Commando.
Oh yes, observe how truly INCREDIBLE AvP is in the hands of advanced players(which is so not me LOL):

Nice to see a good beat'em up topic. Battletoads arcade needs more love. I mean look at this:

Thanks to all the people who gave recommendations based on what I wrote, not just a list of the most popular beatemups of the last 20 years. This should give my girlfriend and me plenty of options next time I coerce her into gaming with me.

Truer words were never spoken. I tried to resist MAME for many years, due to my own beliefs concerning music piracy, but it is too good to pass up.
and what beliefs concerning music piracy might those be? Don't tell me you are an anti mp3 downloading crusader.

Well the Simpsons arcade game is always good if you're with your lady friend.....

but if you want a game that can wail on your ass I would suggest Captain America and the Avengers. In a word that game is HARD.

Also i dunno why this hasn't dawned on anyone else I would also recommend the old Gauntlet games. I dunno if that counts as beat em up but yeah they are still pretty awesome.

Well then we've got a problem which will most likely result in me getting banned from this forum.

The Dungeons & Dragons arcade games (Tower of Doom & Shadows over Mystaria) are awesome beat em ups - you can get a collection of the pair of them for the Saturn, but it's a bit pricey - still well worth it if you're a fan of the genre.

You're joking, right? I don't have a problem with you...and why would you get banned?

All my friends pirate music and they are still my friends...it's okay to believe different things and still get along. 8)

Definitely, I'm a proud owner. They can be played on MAME too. As one of the last few arcade beat'em ups in Capcom's library they are very high quality. Battle Circuit is great too and some call it Capcom's beat best'em up. HG101 had a great article covering ALL of Capcom's beat'em ups.

There are some incredibly underrated beat'em ups out there. Ninja Warriors Again on the S-NES is one of my favorite beat'em ups and I had more fun playing that game than I did with the much more critically acclaimed Streets of Rage 2. I think it's quite a bit better than Streets of Rage 2 actually and doesn't deserve the obscurity that it seems to have. There are some great games out there that get shunned by the gaming community while lesser titles get all the attention.

Also, everyone always talks about Final Fight, but few people mention Final Fight 3 on the S-NES which is the pinnacle of the series.
